Yesterday I was driving along in a bit of delayed traffic and the temperature gauge started heading to hot I notice this because the fans kicked in so pulled out of the traffic to have a look to see what's going on under the bonnet thought might have done hose but all good only just got to half and then calm back down. So my thought maybe the thermostat stuck. But to day when the other half was driving it this afternoon from robin to southport the temperature gauge didn't even move off cold but the car was operating normal. She turned the car off and restarted it the temperature gauge moved to normal operating temp on the gauge. When she got to southport.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Car is booked in on Monday to see what's going on.
Car is ve ss 2006 coming up to nearly 100k on the clock
Do you know what temperature it got to?
I've seen mine hit 108c only in the M5 east tunnel (Sydney) in stopped traffic,- ambient temperature outside at 30c, but expecting more when it gets closer to summer.
Current Ride: 2011 VE Sedan - In Voodoo of course.
Last Ride: 2004 Subaru Liberty GT, Twin scroll turbo, tuned, Bilsteins, sway bars, no rice, 420Nm
Also Own: 1964 EH Wagon, modified interior, minor modifications outside
Under the circumstances it sounds perfectly normal to me.
Traffic not moving much, bugger all air flow, temp rises, fans cut in (as they should), if the temp dropped after a short while then no probs. If it didn't drop then you have a problem.
Sounds like a fault in the coolent temp sensor or software glitch.
The temp gauge in earlier model VE's use to fluctuate between the quater needle mark and nearly half way dependant on the movement of the car (either sitting in slow moving traffic or waiting at the lights to sitting on a constants speed above 60kph). There is a dash/cluster software update (in 2010) which now has temp gauge to read just over the quater mark (so slightly higher than it use to).
Now the temp needle doesn't move no matter what driving conditions your in. If yours is going from not reading an engine coolent temp to halfway and above I'd say there is potentially an issue with the coolent temp sensor. While your at holden get them to SPS the dash/instrument cluster for a software update. The new reading will ease your mind..
If you have to replace the sensor: Holden Part No. 12608814 and costs around $40 +/-.
Cheers
