Just got an '08 SSV Ute 6 Spd Manual looking at installing an in car computer into the head unit. Should only cost around $1,500 AUD.
Will Need
RCA AUX plugs, goes into the AUX ports behind the stock SSV head unit.
PORARES Car PC Intel Core i5 3.2G CPU 4G RAM (Up to 8G) 160 HDD.
HDMI to Yellow/White/Red RCA Connector to go from the PC to the AUX plugs.
7" Touch Screen Overlay kit is placed over the factory LCD Screen ran into the computer via USB port from Cyclotouch.
VIM Kit (hoping to find a place in WA that can do it, any known of much appreciated).
From what I gather that is all you need so that once the AUX button is pressed on the head unit it should switch to the "Carputer".
With that you should be able to play music, movies, use GPS software (with USB GPS antenna), go on the net (with Wireless Broadband Modem), pretty
much anything you can do on a computer.
HiTV Communications Integrated in car entertainment solution, digital TV GPS DVD headrest have done something similar with a navigation unit so i'm assuming it can't be too hard :P. Will keep yas posted. Any knowledge on this
would be sweet as.
Cheers

I'd be interested to know how you go about getting analog composite video and analog audio out of HDMI - it is a digital interface, and does not carry any analog data at all. The only way I could imagine you'd be able to get analog out of it would be with some kind of converter box. While you will be able to connect the PC's speaker output to the head unit's AUX input, you'll need to find another way to get video from the PC to the head unit. If your PC has a PCI slot you could probably install an older PCI video card that has Composite RCA out (which you can just connect straight to the HU) or S-Video out (which can be converted to Composite with a $5 adapter)

Ok bit of an update since i haven't been on in a while. Had the car for just over two weeks now. Got the 22's on it, flat slimline hard top on the way, suspension put on to give it a nice "low look" with the 22's but to keep it practical for WA driving -.- , I have just about finished with the in car computer and will post a video on youtube once i get the touchscreen overlay installed. I did have the problem with the HDMI to Composite cabling but ended up with a VGA to composite converter since I bought a cheapy netbook to run the system off (bit strapped for cash at the moment as working away was canned so my income in less expendable :P) but would be simple enough to upgrade to a better system later.
In Car PC
Samsung 10" Netbook 250GB HDD Space (don't need a lot as everything is run off an iPod)
Centrafuse Auto CarPC Software with Nav Function (Centrafuse™ | Connected Car Applications)
VGA to RCA Converter (DickSmith)
Rear Auxilary Cabling (From JHP)
VIM Kit (Alberts Morley)
Touch Screen Overlay (Ordered from HiTV through Alberts Morley)
SiRF III USB GPS Receiver (Westec Electronics Perth)
Laptop DC Charger for Cars (Westec Electronics Perth), Connected to a Cig Lighter installed by Alberts with a supressor to counter annoying whine from Grounding Loop Problem (Pain in the ass to resolve)
All the Generic RCA Cabling aswell as USB Hub for Glovebox and USB Extension Lead to run from behind passenger chair to glovebox.
To work out the cost you can do your own math, basically works out cheaper than the Holden Nav System and you can do so much more with the system. Will post a video when I get the touchscreen installed and will put pictures up shortly.
I am interested to see how your carputer compares to mine.....
Check out my VE Commodore My Omega Mods
Yeah I had a quick look at yours and looks great pretty much similar idea. i'll upload a video now give me an hour and i'll have it up. only difference would be since i'm using the ssv stereo i'm able to keep the stock ssv looking dash. pros and cons to it though as with anything
Sorry recorded it with my phone and it came out at like 1.5GB cause i did it in full HD ><. Will do one up tonight with pictures etc. going to attempt to install the Overlay by myself cause CBF waiting for monday -.-
Sorry for silly question.
Is there any reason why you are not using the VGA video input on the screen (Sat Nav Input) instead of the Aux Video Input ?)
It may make things a lot easier for you.
Does this input need to be enabled (TECH2) or do you need the Nav Facia for this to work ?
I have the factory Sat Nav, and the back of the Sat Nav unit has an old School VGA connector.
I have never been able to get the connector off and try to connect it to the laptop to see what resolutions it supports, as it has been screwed in extremely tightly, and it is difficult to get a flat bladed screwdriver in there.
I have been looking at doing something very similar myself, though I havent really put too much thought or time in to what is required
Cheers
Mate that could be something for me to look into would make things so much easier. I had no idea the Nav was connected with a VGA cable -.- there must be an adapter holden installs when they install the nav or something because i haven't seen any VGA cables hanging from the back of my stereo :P. The Quality is pretty terrible using the AUX input RCA cable so would make things a lot better. I'm uploading the video to youtube now. If anyone has any info on the VGA input for the Nav button would be much appreciated.
how does the ac work
the aircon works like normal if you've got anything plugged into the AUX vid in it just brings up whatever you push on top of the display. All the carputer does is allow you to watch videos, operate GPS nav shit, pretty much do anything you can on a computer. The only problem I had when i installed the overlay was i hadn't put two tiny things back properly which made the menu button stick and the "fan up" button was missing the little plastic bit which attaches to the button to the chip. But pulled it apart and fixed that and then ####ed more shit so -.- FML just gonna take it to local auto sparky and he should be able to fix it otherwise i'll just get a new faceplate and start again ><.
I will have a look at the workshop manual for what is exactly connected for the Sat Nav.
You are right, there is a connector that is added when Sat Nav is specified.
The VGA Inputs are on the same connector s the Composite Video In.
Pin 1 is for Blue,
Pin 3 is for Red
Pin 11 is for Green
Pin 10 is for RGB Common
Pin 13 is for CSYNC
For reference
Pin 14 is for CVBS1 (Composite Video 1)
Pin 15 is for CVBS2 (Composite Video 2)
I will have a look tonight to see what else is needed / used for Sat Nav.
(I know the facia for Sat Nav is different, and it has a Sat Nav button where the Power button is, but I am not sure how to select/enable the VGA Input at this stage).
