Hi, I've just replaced my shock absorbers all round to suit my SSL lowered springs in my VE sedan. After reinstalling the front struts I noticed there is a gap bewteen the top of the strut tower, in the engine bay, and the top 100mm disc that fits over the top of the shocker shaft. It's not a large gap maybe 3mm or so. I only noticed this after both struts were back in, and I cannot recall if this was the case with the OEM struts. So i pulled the struts back out and took the bearing/bush off to make sure I had the washers is right etc and they were, checked the lenght of the thread against the old struts and all was the same. I would expect that it should not be like this and that the disc should pull down firm onto the body/strut tower? As it has a rubber rim. Driving the car there is no knocking tho, and if I had not noticed this issue I'd be very happy with the end result! I thinking maybe the strut top bushings are chopped out? The top nut is winding down until it locks onto the second nut.
Look at the top of the strut top bushes. The centre should be lower then the outer part of the bush, if not they have collapsed.

I've looked at some new bush pictures online and from memory I think mine may have collapsed as you suggested. That would effectively sit the shaft lower at that mounting point fixing my problem, thanks.
I have a set of brand new SuperPro strut tops including bearings if you need them. $180 posted.
