    Default VE engine mount failure?

I have an 07 VE sv6 manual. It has a knocking noise under the car. I have isolated the noise to the rear engine mount. I can see the wear marks on the two surfaces of the fail safe bracket on the mount. The problem is the rear engine mount appears okay. I know there was a service fix for the front mounts which replaced them,(yet to check if these have been changed) I'm wondering if the front mounts are the cause of placing excessive force on the rear mount.
    Any ideas?

I just had a long and detailed reply to your thread however i had to refresh and well it's gone lol.

In short, i can't see how the front mounts are doing that, it's possible that your rear is a 1 off manufacturing fault some come from the supplier to holden already damaged. So put a bit of paint around the worn areas and try to use a jack to see if you can replicate the noise/ware marks, once you are certain you may just have to replace the mount, firstly call holden and ask about that service fix for the fronts and if there was a follow up for the rear.

    Hope this helps, Good luck.

Or go into Holden completely oblivious, ask them to change fronts and get them to 'upsell' you on the rear. Might save you on labour since the car is already up on the hoist.

It's all good, I have my own hoist. I could see the front mounts have already been changed, identified by the tops of the mounts being painted green. The problem was the transmission mount, although the mount itself was ok. It was actually an additional piece of rubber insulation that is fitted to the "fail safe" brackets on the mount. This piece of rubber has gradually worn away and the bracket made metal to metal contact. New mount fitted with new rubber piece and the problem is solved. I can see this is going to be a common problem as it's a fairly poor design. A piece of rubber hose would solve the problem for those not wanting to buy a new mount. This is a manual only problem, auto mounts are a different design.
