Hi all,
Just picked up my new SS Thunder (am extremely pleased) but was wondering what i can do just to give it a bit of noise while she is idling?
Spoke to a few exhausts joints around town and have been told the best i can do without voiding warranty is to fit 3" pipes from the cats back for around the $1100 mark. So thats keeping the original cats on.
What I am curious about is whether or not there will be a drone when shes drops 4 cylinders?
Thanks in advance,
Mitch.
If noise is all your after then just a catback system will give you that.
Drone can be a personal thing sometime. From what I've read the issue is less of an issue in a ute than say a sedan or wagon while running all 8 cylinders. Running in AFM mode is a lottery, some drone badly others don't but it is a known isssue. If your not a fan of the AFM feature you could have it deactivated in the software by your local tuner.
Probably best to go with some of the known brands (Hurricane, Di Filippo, Manta, KPM etc). Have a look on youtube to get an idea of what they sound like. Also if the ute has been lowered or you intend to lower it, some 3" systems have been know to scrape the ground at times.
Hey mate,
This was a big concern of mine when I was doing my Cat-back. I ended up going for KPM's 2.5" catback. They promised no drone even when in AFM mode. I'd agree with that, however you get a bit of a popping going from 8 -> 4 and more noticeably from 4 -> 8. With the KPM, the transitions aren't too loud so it really doesn't bother me. My local tuner offered to turn AFM off for me to avoid the sounds. I am happy to leave it there until I get my tune done.
I'd be looking at difilipo, KPM or VCM for a catback. If you want to retain AFM, you'll be best going twin 2.5".
I've got the 2.5" KPM cat-back as well, I did a lot of research on here and other places before going with KPM as stated above they guarantee no drone, I'm very happy with it. I don't think you will have a problem with drone on the ute, so there are much cheaper options than the KPM, the 2.5" KPM polished stainless cat-back is $2200, and you could get an x-force system for $750 (not-stainless). There are a few threads on here that should fill you in. But it also depends on how you want it to sound, price can be a difference there as well, there is a difference in sounding like a HQ or an AMG so to speak. But a more refined expensive sound may not be to your liking. Also KPM recommend the 2.5" for the AFM models where as some recommend the 3".
And keep away from the "cheaper" exhaust systems buddy.
I bought my VE SSV with a 2.5 inch Xforce catback upgrade and it's drone city. I just drove the car from Sydney to Melbourne and back and wanted to shoot myself.
I'm looking at getting some work done in the not too distant future and will be getting KPM or Difillipo. I learned the hard way that you pay for what you get..

On second thought, a mild steel X-force system with AFM disabled is the best bang for buck exhaust.
Interesting, I did hear that the drone will be less in the ute.
I don't really want to spend $2200 on the KPM 2.5" system. Starting to think i might just give this 3" cat-back a go and see what it sounds like. If after a few weeks I'm not happy I'll still have the original 2.25" ones i can throw back on and somehow offload the 3" and get a bit back for them.
Cheers all!
My engine building mate says 2.5" is big enough for mild 6.0 engine. 3" looses a bit of low end boot.
Bigger is not allways better![]()
