Just wandering if anyone knows how the Bilstein coilovers are for the VE. From what I've seen, coilover prices are usually greater than $2000 for a decent set up, and I've stumbled across the vcm suite website and they are selling the coilovers for $1899. are these any good?
car is a VE SS, and is a daily not thinking of tracking it so yeah.
any replies will be great full
Thanks.
i thought the vcm ones were h&r, if they are there only height adjustable. no adjustable valving.
in that case, dont do it mate.
coilovers in a daily driver is complete overkill, and a waste of money that would othewise serve a much better purpose spent on other parts of the car.
dont get me wrong, coilovers are awesome.... I myself have a nice set from DMS on a track car. but for my daily driver no way in hell would I do it.
i'd go pedders sportsryders, they are in my VE and I'm very happy with them.
if you want a little more 'snap', change bushes over to something a little harder, and maybe consider some sway bars... but dont go coilovers. the wank factor in telling friends that you are running coilovers will fade very quickly when you feel every bump on the shitty local roads. things will start to rattle in the interior, and all of sudden you'll be wishing for a softer setup. trust me. but if you plan to do track days on a regular basis, they will DEFINIELY make a difference. save your cash bud, and put it somewhere else on the car.
I think they are branded H & R 'coilovers' with Bilstein supposedly doing the internals.
I got a kit off them that uses Bilstein front strut inserts and rear shocks(rear 3 position ride height) and H & R progressive rate springs
It was a QSP-16 kit ,Monotube design front and rear
They also do QSP-10 kit that uses Twin tube on front monotube on rear
My ride height after fitting 25mm lower front 40mm lower on rear with highest position adjustment
Best modification so far, really improves the 'feel' of my SV6 ute
Plus coilovers do require rebuilding every other year depending on km's travelled.
I've got the kit from VCM, it consists of H&R Springs and Bilstein shocks, I've got them in an SV6 Ute, LOVE THEM!![]()
coilovers can be adjusted to be softer, and $2000 coilovers arent good enough for track work
the novelty of coilovers is the adjustability
I'm using H&R coilovers, they use Bilstein shocks/internals. I didn't get them from VCM thou, cheaper but.
I love them, the ride quality is still good and they handle nicely. Not choppy or harsh, significantly less body roll to.
They are height adjustable only. 10-60mm I think.
Thanks for the replies, is it a hard or soft ride with the bilsteins from vcm?
I'll have these bilstein coilovers fitted tomorrow to my VE SS ute, so can post back.
Have been in VEs with XA coilovers, various shock/spring combos, Koni and bilstein inserts etc... so can provide a comparison.
Ive got pedders coilovers all round, had them over 7 months or so no problems and it is great being able to ajust the height and how hard/soft it rides
If you are unsure, VCM also do a bilstein shock and H&R spring kit which I put on my wagon. AWESOME! Very comfy ride but feel very sturdy on the road! The guys there are great. Give them a buzz and have a chat.
cheers
I'm 100% with UFO on this one.
I put Pedders XA coilovers in my VE SS ute to do track days but it never happened and they ended up absolutely ruining the car for everyday use. Every small bump is like you've hit a rock and medium sized bumps feel like you've hit a gutter. I had mine set to near fully soft after the first 2 months as anything more and the interior would rattle like a tank.
The height adjustment becomes pointless after you get them to a spot that doesn't scrape over every speed bump so you might aswell of gone SSL springs anyway.
Now there is the legality of the things, most states are making them illegal as the ride height can be quickly adjusted bellow a 100mm of ground clearance. And if that happens, goodbye insurance claims if you crash.
In the end I hated them that much that when I got my new Maloo I sold the fricken things and got a decent set of H&R springs and front a rear whiteline anti-roll bars. The ride is much much smoother on every surface, and dare I say it, they handle allot better too.
They are also pointless unless your doing bushes and roll bars as well, so you'll be up for $3K+ just to lower your car a few inches and say to your mates "I've got coilovers" in which they'll reply "why?" as mine did.
Sorry but just reading through all this mumble jumble I get the bit no point getting coilovers so thanks for ur input there but what would u do if u guys had ur chance again can u write up shopping list in what u would do this time to upgrade your standard suspension. And what brands? Thanks guy
I have the Pedders XA's which are adjustable in dampness and height.
To say they are overkill is ridiculous. I have played with the settings many times and the height has been changed a few times to suit change in rims. I drive my car everyday and even when I had the pedders sportsryder springs and went to coilovers the change was unreal
I question those that make comments about the coilovers in cars if they are actually people that have them in their car. One of the best modifications I have done to my car
Edit: From what I understand, the pedders items are the only ones that can be fully rebuilt.
Dont get me wrong, the Pedders XA's are a awesome bit of kit. The issue is that they are pointless unless you actually "need" them. And since I was going to do some track work I got them, but I never got around to it and they just ended up destroying my previous cars interior and my spine :P
ive got the pedders xa's in mine and the ride is great, not hard at all.
ive fitted a lot of pedders xa's to customer cars and if there set up correctley they ride good, people stuff around with the valving and soften them up to much and then they cant control the spring and ride sh1t.
there deffinatly not the best coil over, but for the money they are a pretty good unit, and if set up correctly they are good for a daily driver.
At the moment DMS and ourselves are having a special on VT-VZ Commodore, we can do 40mm DMS for $1980 plus delivery per car set including springs, freight and GST. Regular price about $3.5k... Don't ask me why, just take advantage of it!
