Default Where to place car stands when jacking up the rear of a Sedan VE Berlina?

    Hi,

This Saturday I will be replacing my single exhaust on sedan VE Berlina with a dual exhaust system. I will need to jack up the rear of the car to allow me to get access to the exhaust system. I have purchased some car stands as additional support but I am not sure at which point on the rear of the car the stands will be suitable to take the weight of the car?

Has anyone had any experience using car stands on the rear of VE sedan?

Any advice or pictures would be useful?

    Thanks

    Jo.

I had the same problem when I did my exhaust, i found that there was no need to jack the back. However jacking of the front was needed. Being a uni student I just reversed my Omega up on bricks to get under the front and hey presto all good (BTW I did chock the rear wheals).

EDIT: Ok so this was probably not the safest thing ever, so I don't recommend it...

Sorry bigboss but i wouldnt recommend that, one wrong move and squisho. I did this very thing on the weekend when changing the missus SV6 (VE) oil, as her SV6 is a bit lowered at the front and i couldnt get under there. Have a look in the manual, it has where to put a trolley jack, if you can lift it, those points will also hold the weight. I jacked mine up from the front crossmember and put the jacks either side. Have a look in the manual and fire off any more questions if needed. Am looking at changing the SV6 dual to a HSV clubby dual, let us know how you go, maybe do a write up on it and post it up, if you have time that is.

I used a forklift before to jack it up safely, put blocks as extra safeguard underneath and behind the rear wheels so it couldn't move. Just a thought.

okay I have worked it out. I jack up the car using a trolley jack from the middle section towards the rear and then place the stands on the hoist mounting points at each side.

Also just wanted to confirm if a 1400kg trolley jack is suitable to jack up a VE Berlina sedan from the back. Do i need to up to 2000kg?

Also will do a right of the exhaust replacement how to.

Thanks again for all your help.

I also did this mod at home, not fun with ceased oxygen sensors, and you need a deep 16mm for the front nuts, or spark plug socket will do, And also it's just not a nice job on the floor!!

When you are doing it you will find the nuts that hold the pipes on up the front end (inline with the back of the front wheals) are a bit of a pain. They are just at a bad location, to get them off I used a socket 16mm (I think) that was made to take out spark plugs. It worked fine just a bit of a job. Good luck mate

EDIT: looks like Kizza beet me to it

Would it be easier to loosen the front bolts first by jacking the car from the front first and then jack the back of the car to the rear bits.

Also I only have a short 16mm socket and ring spanners. Could I undo the front ones with a ring spanner?

Nope impossible to do with a ring spanner. Go to your local hardware and pick up a 16mm spark plug socket set only $10 or so. I did not need to lift the rear at all but yes you could do it in stages like that.

Picked it up cheap with mufflers, on sold them. I thought the SV6 was 2.25" and the HSV/V8 models were 2.5", pipework looks slightly bigger. I could get under a lowered SV6 to change over the back mufflers, so u shouldnt need to do the rear, may make it a bit easier though but not needed.

Are you talking about were the factory jack goes, Its not so much on a chasis rail and that would bend wouldnt it? Like you see on some older cars, these points tend to bend.

Below shows the location of all the nuts/ bolts you will need to undo.
Oh and the red shows the O2 sensors (Mine were hard to get off, needed much WD40)
And if you are having trouble go for a drive to heat everything up worked a treat for me.

When NAAF did my cat back we just drove my car (reversed) up a set of ramps. that worked really well.. I know they are a lil expensive, but make ur life easier down the track too, all your oil changes an any time u need to get under the car just drive up ramps instead of f*&^%king around with jacks and stands.. well, thats my opinion anyway

I have both and use ramps wherever possible, unless the wheels have to come off for some reason, then it's stands

You have to install your heat shield and all also, I couldn't find bolts for the factory holes, so I used tex screws into the chassis rail when it lined up, worked a treat, and also bolts for the muffler hanger

SS/SSV is 2.25, same as the V6 models - 99% sure it's the same story with HSV. The only thing HSV does different are the short headers they fit up to the regular GMH cats. I'm sure they're identical to SS from there back, aside from the brushed tips.

Is the O2 sensors bolted on or do they unclip or unplug?

They screw in, a good shifting spanner will do them fine. Or an open ended wrench.
