hey guys im looking into buying either an SSV or clubsport with the super clubby kit from HSV,havent looked too much into it yet,but what im wondering is if i go for the SSV i would want the AFM system,i heard this is only on the autos,is this true? and if so would it be possible to do a manual conversion and bypass that problem using a switch or something? id prefer a manual but the AFM sounds great for fuel economy.
i realise this may already be a topic but im new to the VE game and i just want to know what im looking at when i go to the dealership
thanks guys
Why would you want AFM? The new V8's are pretty fuel efficient as it is if you don't bury your foot in the accelerator all the time which would negate AFM anyway. The 6 speed Manual would do bugger all revs on the highway anyway, and once you get an aftermarket tune fuel economy can improve even further if that's what you're after.
But honestly, AFM just complicates things and being a V8 one day you're gonna want to modify if and AFM will make it harder to do so. AFM was only installed in the V8's to keep the greenies happy, if you want economy then buy a modern turbo deisel hatch.
Cheap, fast, reliable.....you only get to choose two.
hmmm good point,if thats the case il just go for the super clubby hahahaha
The AFM means on the highway it turns off half the cylinders.
It does have a complication, though: you can't get most normal exhausts to play nicely, they all drone (so you hear a horrible sound within the cabin) because the pressure isn't high enough for the exhaust which otherwise sounds great on eight cylinders.
Plus, your fuel economy isn't going to be all that great anyhow.
The last point is that SSV vs HSV, you pay a big premium for the HSV brand and quality.
You can work an SSV to be just as fast, from what I've read about $10K will do it, although if you do your cam it can complicate warranty issues relating to the engine obviously. It still won't look like an HSV though.
Last point, in two years we'll probably have VF model, and maybe if you want an HSV wait for then? Drive an SSV in the mean time, maybe.
yea good point about the VF,SSV is cheaper til then, can always trade up afterwards
On the series 2 SS/SSV they come with the L77, so both autos and manuals have AFM internals but only the autos are active- pain in the bum if you want to cam it later as you have the extra expense of removing the DOD gear. AFM is not worth much. In my S2 SS after adding headers, hi flows cats, OTR and tune, im seeing fuels figures 1-2lts/100 less than the stock car and an extra 30rwkw to boot!
far out man not too bad, haha gotta love those corvette motors![]()
AFM isn't that great, it shuts down to 4 cyl whenever your not accelerating going up hill, cruise control on etc. You wont be noticing any dramatic difference in fuel economy, if you looking for better economy go for a new cold air intake and aftermarket exhaust. Thats just my 2c though.
Just had mine (auto series 2 SSV) turned off when it was tuned after exhaust and OTR. I haven't noticed much difference in fuel economy (if anything it might be a bit better). The bloke who did said it said the AFM makes about 1 litres difference per tank.
1 litres difference per tank.
Hardly think that statement is correct.
Maybe he meant 1 litre per 100km.
I dont think afm is all that bad, obviously if your gonna do it up you deactivate DOD.
I get 10.9 - 14.0 with my daily routes and thats including a fair bit of urban too.
Once my warranty wears out, see ya afm.
No Replacement for Displacement
afm is crap.just a gimmick to keep the tree huggers happy.get it tuned, turn it off. oh and my engine is (was) afm. it'll cost a couple of grand -parts and labour plus a tune tweak- to swap it all out.more if you cam it..but well worth it
im out of my mind at the moment...please leave a message
