Okay so i have just dropped my car off for its 1 year 15000km service. The conditions of me getting the 6 year extended warranty is that i have to service it with the dealer once a year. First time i have ever taken any of my cars to get serviced, i normally do it myself.
From what i read in the service manual it says i'll be charged 1.4hrs labor and the only thing they change is the oil and oil filter, everything else gets "checked".
So im thinking, being a Holden dealer around $300ish for that. But no... i am wayyyyy off. I am being slugged $510.
Is the service manual wrong and they are doing more than oil and oil filter or am i being ripped? Can anyone else confirm this before i go and blow up at them...
Best thing to do would be to ask them exactly what they did. $500 for a general service is far too expensive!
sent from my Galaxy SII using tap talk
You are clearly being ripped!! And as mentioned, ask them what they have done and why it's so much. I've done the research for my 2011 S2 SS 15,000km service and got quoted between $240 and $290 from various dealers. That will give you an idea of how much you're getting ripped
As you'd imagine, the 'six year warranty' thing has to be profitable for the dealer to offer it. They don't get backed by Holden. So, I've heard many people getting overcharged for each of the annual services.
Sounds like that's what is happening to you, too.
Note you can buy a Holden factory-backed warranty, taking it to five years, for about $1500 or so I think. That's not what you've got.
Also check Fixed Price Car Service: Auto Service, Car Repairs, Car Servicing for some ideas of local garages who'd do it for a set and fair price.
mate got mine done for $280 ,even that's a ripoff as it is only really a oil filter ,engine oil and safety check
Worth it only for resale
I checked the same service on the website "gravity" posted and all under $250 for the service.
Further research i called another Holden dealer and asked for a price and they said $420, suprise suprise. So i called back the dealer that im getting my car serviced at and acted like a random wanting to know a price and suprise suprise the too said $420.
I gave my missus brother in law a call who knows the guys down at this particular Holden too see whats going on and they've dropped the price to $400 for me which i still think is waayyyy waayyyyy over priced.
According to the service manual, its 1.4 hours labour and oil and oil filter so if you break down the alleged $510 figure it initially means they are charging me $290/hr in labour allowing $115 odd dollars for oil and oil filter.
WTF who are these people i dont even think doctors charge that much!!
this must be mcGrath Holden![]()
I had the 15000km Service done yesterday at Holden and the cost was $397.
3/11 SV6 auto sporstwagon.
The other tip i have for you is tell them you want the log book service, Otherwise they will charge you
$12.00 for oil flush
$10.50 injector clean
Although it didnt stop them charging me $8.95 for degreaser & $28 for workshop comsumables.
Our service fee was a flat 200 for Oil and Filter change plus an update of the IQ system and I thought that was unreasonable. $510 sounds obsessive if all they have done is an oil and filter change
Any of the minor services (15,000km, 30,000km, 60,000km, 75,000km) etc...are literally oil and filter change and a "check" of everything else. Aside from when you may need the brake fluid flushed (as this is every 2yrs regardless of km's)...anything over $300 for these services is excessive. You can clearly get it done elsewhere for much cheaper, but I'm happy to pay the inflated price of around $250-$300 so when I trade in the log book has Holden services stamped all through it. That's just a personal preference. Plus, I always provide my own oil that meets their specs so their $280 service at my local dealer actually costs me around the $200...give or take. So $500 minor services is grossly overpriced and I simply wouldn't take it there on principle knowing they were trying to rip me. Save your money on each service and use it toward any repairs you MAY need after the factory warranty as this is far more economical than trying to get the car serviced under their overpriced extended warranty.
Had mine serviced this morning (just got home) provided my own oil and filter, $200.00. Series 11 SS.
I hear you all let me tell you. I will be picking the car up in about an hour so i will check everything that's been done on the invoice because i will be hitting them up for it all and let you all know what the go is.
I just called 2 other Holden dealers and was told $230 at one and $300 at the other. This car better fly after being charged $510 for it, i want wings to bloody pop out the sides lol
Did not see the bottle, this time as i now clearly ask for log book service without all the $$$ add ons when booking it in, but last time (Few years back was Wynns injector clean & Oil Flush)
On another note my oil will stay fresh as it used 1.4ltrs in 12,000km so i have to take it back in 18000km and 21000km to do a oil consumption test. I hope some noob just didnt top up the oil after the 3000km service.
Got mine done last week
Series II SV6 $325
gezzz, $500 sounds like an absolute joke!
I'll be coming up on my 15,000 service soon, and i was guesstimating around the 250-300 mark...
now this might be a stupid question, but im not too sure how all the shit works with the separate dealers. Can i take my car to get serviced at any holden, or does it have to be the holden dealer i bought it from?
only asking this as im not fully confident with the blokes at the place i bought it from, though buying parts from another dealer im happy with them and would like to take it there..
For normal warranty you can take it to any holden dealer.
Aftermarket warranty doesnt usually kick in till new car warranty runs out so theoretically you can take that to any dealer as well till the new car warranty expires and the aftermarket takes over.

You can take the car to any Holden dealer and do not have to get it service by the selling dealer.
You can take it to any licenced mechanic, even the local Service station or ultra tune, The warranty is only invalid if it misses scheduled servicing or they use inferior parts or incorrect oil specs. So unless you supply the oil and watch how do you know?
The dealer i bought my car from gave me 3yrs extended warranty if i had the car serviced by them, if i go else where then the extended warranty is void.
Yep, like he said, you can have it serviced anywhere if you only care about Holden's manufacturer warranty. I'll go to my local workshop, who have serviced my VW Golf affordably for a few years.
So after my missus brother in law had a word with the guy he knows at this particular holden i got it for $370 which is much better than $510 obviously but still pretty outrages. All i can say to you all is either kick up a stink about the price or, if you dont have to service it at that particular holden to avoid voiding your extended warranty then shop around. I managed to find it for $230 at Holden Peninsula in Bankstown. Cheers guys.
Goodyear Auto Service, $180... logbook service.
Factory warranty intact, and with the money you save over the 3 year period (and interest on that money), you could well and truely cover any unforseen (however unlikely) issue that comes up after warranty period.
Dealer servicing, and especially extended warranty 'exclusive service agreement' with a particular dealer is for chumps.
It's these same people that feel it's necessary to pay thousands of dollars for extra rust protection.
And as unfair as it is that dealers prey upon these gullible people, they technically arent doing anything illegal.
This is no offence to the OP... I'm not trying to offend. But people need to wake up and not listen to the bullshit these salespeople spew from their mouths.
Some aftermarket warranties are worth it but they arent cheap. The cheaper ones dont cover much at all.

They just quoted me $390 for the 15,000km service. I asked what oil is used, "synthetic", what sort of synthetic?, "Castrol", Castrol what?, "FNX" (Which I can't find on Castrols website even under the workshops area). Would be $70-$80 cheaper if I supply my own oil
I should have been a dentist having to extract the answers to my questions.
I rang Peninsular Holden and they quoted $285 with Valvoline semi synthetic, or $235 if I supply my own
