Hey, thinking of buying a ve either SV6 or SS I currently have a vx s2 s-pack and was just wondering if anybody have driven both a vx s-pack and a newer sports ve, do the ve drive smoother? I like in rural Australia so the roads are shit house. If they ride rough what are the Calais like? All the ve's I am looking at are MY9.5 or newer.
Hopefully that all makes sense
Thanks
Dad has a MY09 VE SV6 and it's very smooth, still new though only done around 22000ks so dont know what there like when they get a few k's on them.
I want to know what they are like once they have a few km on the, I am not looking at a new 1.
You can take used cars for test drives too... Even private sales. I feel like I'm missing something here![]()
none of the car dealers around here have any second hand.
and there isn't many 4sale i would have to travel for 1, plus don't have much time as i work 14 hour days.
no comparison mate.
whichever VE variant you get, it's going to ride smoother, rattle less, and be much more enjoyable/comfortable to drive over long distances.
i feel much less fatigued driving the ve over long distances than any other previous car i've owned. for sure!
I had a VX SS, and despite spending a bunch on the suspension, a VE SS or SV6 will handle better out of the box. The VE is SOOOOOOO much more refined. Less road noise, better acceleration, better braking, better interior, better everything.
Before I bought my SSV i took several for a drive, and would choose it over the SV6 anyday. Not that the 6 is a bad car, Ive driven them a few times at work, but the V8 under the bonnet wins everytime IMO.
If you can afford the upgrade to an SS or even SSV, do it. On the highway, in 6th gear, it just chews up the kilometers no problems at all. As for the harshness of the ride, I find the stock FE2 a bit soft to be honest, and this is on Adelaide roads, so they are only marginally better than whats in the bush lol. But I drive mine for 45 mins everyday to and from work, and its just a lovely ride in a straight line and around town.
You can't compare them both, I've just upgraded to a new ssv ute from the old thunder 6. They are just great machines! Could not recommend it more. I think if you went for the sv6 you'd wish you spend the extra on the 8. Mines lowered on 20"s and I do a fair few trips home out west and the ride is great, not to mention the leather!!!
Drove the boss's SS ute today, to easy to speed![]()
I traded my VE SV6 in on a VE GTS. The GTS with 20s rides far better than the SV6 did(on 18s) Even with the Magnetic suspension on, its still not rough.
I drive to Adelaide a bit, and usually go the Coorong, and its good even on that "road". SA country roads aint that good either
Oh, and definatly go the V8 if you can.
Have to agree with UFO. I bought my wife a VE SSV wagon so she could have something to go shopping in, now I use it to travel to and from gigs because there is less fatigue over longer distances and the ride handles the bumps pretty well. The VE ride and handling wont ever measure up to a German Marquee or a Jag but that's not the point. Its apparently better than the previous model, which is probably better than it's previous model and so on.
Had a VXSS at one stage and am now onto my 3rd VE. No question the VE poops all over the VX for ride, NVH and overall driving experience. In both my earlier VE's I did find the rear OEM shocks went away quite quickly (around 60,000km) making the rear a bit nervous over bumps. Nothing massive but I do notice these things more than most. Swap the shocks for a good quality set if it's done more than 75k and you will have a very capable car that will out preform most other medium and large 4 door sedans on the road. Check out forum sponsor GSR rallysport for prices on something that is value for money but a cut above your OEM crap.

Yeah good old SA country roads. If something exists past Gepps Cross in this state, then it doesn't concern the government Lol.
Because of the sports suspension in the sv6 and ss, the ride is naturally going to be sort of stiff. I had a VT Calais and personally, I'd say that was a softer ride. It was like driving on marshmellows sometimes. Loved that car. But, I wouldn't give back my sv6 in a hurry. The advancement, even from the VZ to the VE, is huge.
"It's like comparing apples to...well you know what I mean."
What do the newer Calais like?
I thought my VT Berlina (lowered slightly with King springs and Monroe GT shocks) rode smoother than my VE Calais (bought it already with Pedders Sportsrider springs, i think, and 20" rims)... So I guess that's not a fair comparison![]()
