Hi everyone.
First time post, (new member)...have searched this great site to find the answer but no luck so thought I'd come out and ask.
I dont want the auto but have partly paraysed right arm..I can and have driven manual cars until recently but feel a bit risky getting behind a new ss manual and needing two arms to maintain control on those rare occasions the back gets out etc. I'm 60 btw.
Just have to say this is insanity on the part of GMH to make every 'sport' auto fitted with an AFM engine...whats the big deal getting the factory to bolt a standard engine
to the auto in the production line??
?It seems the AFM is very unpopular in any SS, but esp the ute.. and I can understand why.. ...
I love the idea of the semi-auto in the SS....but definitely do not want an AFM engine at any price.
If thers no other option, I imagine the AFM engines' valve train can be converted back to 'normal' (set of valve springs and minus solenoids etc) , but at what cost?..and are there other unforseen problems by doing that?...will the engine need re-mapping or different chip etc? I imagine it would.
With the L98 motor no longer being used, there is very little difference now between the AFM and non-AFM motors internally - except for there obviously being no active DOD on the manuals. You can have AFM switched off with a simple tune without changing any other internals.
ah ok ok..great news for me that sounds very encouraging, seems I looked too much into this or what I read about different valve springs and other things needed to de-actuate the mutant 4 cylinders is out of date/...but, excuse my ignorance.."no active DOD" ?
Got...Displacement on Demand
Just rang the dealer....despite this work not enhancing engine speed or power, they say it voids warranty....any excuse eh?...its then the same fargin engine as the manual but no warranty...WTF
It voids the warranty because it wasn't done by them. Not much you can do about that. Won't affect the warranty on non-engine/gearbox components however.
Didn't think you could tell the difference when driving it but anyway. Are you going to modify the ute at all? Exhaust and such
If you're worried about warranty, and don't want the AFM, your best bet is to probably go to Walkinshaw, get them to tune the car, and to my knowledge, you will keep your warranty.
There are also a few dealerships that offer similar services, just gotta find them.
Just buy the auto, pay a tune shop $100 to turn the AFM master switch off and say nothing to Holden. The engines are the same inside whether you buy the auto or manual...they are both L77's. If for some reason you had a warranty issue that needed attention from Holden, simply return the tuner shop, have them flash the ECM back to stock and Holden will never know
Thanks Jim..will ring the Brissie outlet (Powertorque) tomorrow
OK Porta....thx mate but just not my 'cup of tea'..just me I guess.
Thx Blue...will keep that in mind IAEF.
However I'd like to acknowledge a really fantastic PM I received from TinSnips this afternoon...really VERY much appreciated, very thorough and translated to 60 yo blokes thinking...thanks a lot.
Feel like I'm coming out of a 35 year coma !!!
Prenty, in case it helps you any further than Tinsnips, basically AFM isn't as big a problem in series 2 VE as it used to be unless you want to heavily modify the engine (in which case, you need to remove a bunch of AFM stuff).
So I'm 36, drive an auto SSV wagon, and left the AFM enabled even after tuning it, since it wasn't causing any problems on my series 2.
Thanks Gravity...yes most unlikely I would modify the engine other than some proven changes that Tinsnips has suggested at around the $4000-$5000 mark.
Just read your post on that sensational wagon of yours..drool...out of my price range sadly but gee thats a great alternative esp for a family....seems like you have the right balance going for the wagon mate..very clever thinking.
Thanks everyone for your input.
Will let you all know what transpires in next month or so.
Dunno why people are worried about AFM it doesnt affect performance and only kicks in at minimal throttle/revs.
Silver Certified.
No Replacement for Displacement
HSV's don't have AFM either.

There is something wrong with your car perhaps? Or your driving style? Honestly lag? maybe just bap the throttle by pushing it like maybe .000000000000000001mm before you slam it. Are you sure the lag you are talking about is not the auto? have you put an OTR on without a tune? This maybe your lag......get a tune and get the T43 done as well if you really want to snap!
There is no lag from the AFM....if you're feeling lag it's the transmission tune
