Default Some info on hi-stall torque converters

ok.... after deciding i wasn't going to frig with the SS, i got a full exhaust, extractors hi-flow system, and got it retuned. Drives great!! Glenn at G-Force Performance at Gateshead did a terrific job.
Now.... i am looking at putting a cam in it, the one i am looking at will need a high stall converter. Along with that i am going to put a 3.45 diff centre in it as well. Should hum along nicely once it's all done!

My question.... i have never had anything to do with an auto with a hi-stall converter in it. What kind of effect will it have on driveability seeing as my wife drives it more than i do!!

    • UNDERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the front of the car.

    • OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear.

    • HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the wall.

    • TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.

Call TCE in Melb and have a chat to Dwayne. I have a old Holden with a 3500 RPM high stall. There are great and very bad stall converters. Mine drives like a normal auto most of the time. That is until I stand on it and it flashes (revs straight to 3500) then hooks up, and I mean hooks up. Mine is so good I would go higher in the stall speed if doing it again.

So what you are saying is that if the wife is driving it normally, it won't be a drama until the loud pedal gets mashed?

i was looking at a 2,500 rpm stall.... to suit this cam, which works from 2,000rpm to 6,700rpm which would work in ok with my rev limiter set at 6,800

i got a big cam in my VX SS (238/240 .605 .609 112deg) with a 3,000 stall convertor and it drives like normal when your cruising sensibly around the streets.... then ya stand on the serious pedal and it turns into a pantie moistening beast

trust me you wont regret it
    If in doubt......FLOOR IT!!!

Yours should have the lock up clutch in it too, so despite the stall size, it should act as per factory on the highway.
If you talk to a converter shop, don't be shy with them, give ALL your specs

yeah i was looking at a few sites... some made mention of the fact that the converters had carbon lockup clutchs in them. I know that when the trans is used in tiptronic it locks the converter in every gear except first.
