Default Fitting 20"x8.5 on VE Sportswagon Series II SV6

Hey guys this is my first post here as I've just bought my new car, well my parents did for my 18th.

I'm just wondering the stock alloys that come with the car are 18"x8.0 is there any chance I could fit a pair of Verde Black Ice 20"x8.5 on there without having the roll the guards?

Any help would be much appreciated.

yes no problem with the right offset obviously. ve's have 20'' wheels as an option when new. i have 20x10 on the rear of my lowered ute with no guard rolling needed so unless you go stupidly low you wont need to either. nice 18th b'day present by the way!

dont different states have different requirements for wheels?

some state that 2" above standard is ok, but others (like NSW RTA) get into rolling diameter specifics to ensure speedo remains accurate.

OP, best to check your state roads authority. Where is Pakenham anyway ?

its more about what your tyre placard says. I wrote this post on a different thread. We tried to put a set of 20" rims on a mates SV6 ute. The rears were fine but the tyre placard didnt have a correct load rating for a 20" tyre for the SV6. If you buy a commodore from the dealer and option it with 20" rims, they change the tyre placard to suit (I dont know why, I just know it happened.

The 20's you have mentioned will be fine. As bladerunner said it will be dependent on offset if it scrubs. My guards were rolled to suit 10" rears but they still scrub. The stance is great and it doesnt do it all the time so I live with it. If yours is not lowered and they are the right offset, then bob's your uncle.

Simply use a tyre rated for a SS or HSV. This is what they would be anyway if you went to 20" from dealer. Then get the tyre placard changed to suit 20". Some dealers will do it or ebay is your friend.

i looked at upgrading to supersports when i brought my ute and was told the following; when the 20'' wheel and tyre option is specified the placard is replaced by the dealer and they are complianced to the vehicles vin number for legality purposes,a hbd/hsvi plate is placed in the engine bay specifying what option has been added. i spoke with both the dealer and holden and was told the same thing by both. do you have the plate in your engine bay ufo?
bonners would you care to name here in bris (via pm if need be)who does the placard swap as i would be keen to do it-legally, instead of just changing the placard and hoping for the best-illegally

You raise an interesting point bladerunner, but no.... I dont have an engine plate, nor do I believe that I need one for legal reasons.
The standard compliance plate states that the car (in its standard form) meets the relevant ADR's and is suitable for registration in all Australian states. All the registration bodies from the different states then have their own rules regarding what minor modifications are allowed in addition to the standard ADR's to a car without having to get certification from a dealer or engineer.

Accordingly, all the modifications made to my car satisfy these rules for my state (havent lowered it too much, rolling diameter difference is within limits, window tint isnt too dark etc). A new compliance plate isnt needed for any of these modifications. Sure you could get engineer certification (or dealer certification) but to what end if you already satisfy registration requirements? The only time a HSVi plate would be useful is when it comes time to sell or trade in, as the HSVi plate would tell the buyer that the mods are genuine Holden issue. I can accomplish the same result by showing my original contract of sale (lists the supersports).

Going by what you've said, it would mean that every single car out there with aftermarket rims and no special plate from the selling dealer in the engine bay wouldnt be satisfying roadworthiness requirements, and that's not the case.
The HSVi plate just lists the genuine mods you've received from the dealer. My thinking is the only time it would benefit you is if those parts exceeded the minor mod limits imposed by your state.

that's not exactly what I was implying. to clarify- I never questioned why they do that when I enquired but from what I've been able to work out since is that us ute owners have only one tyre size option on our placards where as sedans and wagons? Have a choice of several sizes on theirs. the compliance might be to state that the load capacity is reduced because of the new tyre load ratings. yes I know all about mods and the relavant requirements. as for the plate, yes I know it's only a cosmetic thing as you say but whenever I've seen a set of factory 20"s optioned that plate has been attached somewhere in the engine bay. in a nutshell it comes down to load ratings and rolling dia. Well it does here in qld anyway

    pretty basic anwser here guys.

If the wheels are factory on HSV they will fit all VE models and the HSV maximum size are 20x8.5 front and 20x9.5 rear.

If you have any doubt about being legal (which he never asked) ring your local cop shop and check the state law's before you spend your money. And dont cry and go waaaa!!!! but the guys on the forum said..... do some research eg. ask police, ask Holden, HSV or a wheels shop for the best answer
