Hey guys
Im thinking of replacing the battery in my car as im running a bit of audio equipment. 2 subs and 2 amps. Not alot but I no the ve's have there fair share of battery drainage issues with out the extra stuff draining the battery. My main question what have people replaced there factory battery with. And experiences with different batteries in the ve and prices. Any info would be greately appreciated. Cheers
just use the the battery that is put in the holden export cars and diesel cruze. its a exide battery .. its a LN4 or 77H. about 600cca,and has a good reserve capacitory.also fitted to police cars
Cheers for that
As an option you could also consider a Century DIN65LH which is suited to VE and will provide 660 CCA's.
Have a look at optima yellow tops.
i cant tell you where.all i can say is look up exide at elizabeth sa. there sales office might be able too help .sprints i know sell exide batteries but not sure if they stock them,,i work there but in the factory.cheers loopie
Ah cheers for that mate
is it going to do any harm putting in an optima yellow top(higher cca-ah and reserve capacity) -regaurds to the CAN-BUS system?
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
thank you.
I have been checking this out recently as well...
The problem that I can see with the Optima Yellow tops (D34 Yellow Top), the battery terminals are around the wrong way... (The Positive terminal needs to be on the RHS of the battery). No one can tell me for sure if this will cause grief when fitting to a VE.
The Optima Red top has a 34R battery, which is similar specs to the Yellow Top D34, except the Battery Terminals are swapped so as it is suitable for the VE....
I would REALLY like to get the Optima Yellow Top Battery, except I am unsure if the battery terminals will give me a headache when fitting the battery up...
(I have been told the Yellow Tops are the better battery for constant loads such as sound systems and such)....
The other alternative (EXPENSIVE ALTERNATIVE) is to go for an Odyssey Dry Cell Battery 12V PC1500RT (34R).
These are similar specs to the D34 Yellow Top, and they have the RHS Positive Terminal for our VEs...
Problem is I cannot find anyone in Oz that sells these.....
Hope this helps...
Can't you just turn the battery around the other way and make it work?

To be honest, I am not sure.... (I hope so !!!!)
The battery terminals are on the front of the battery, so I do not know if they will reach if the battery was swung around, and the terminals were at the back of the battery.
(Im kind of worried about buying a $300 battery, and it being a bit of a hack job to get it to fit).....
I know there would be no problems if I went for the Optima Red Top 34R, or the Odyssey 1500RT.
The yellow top 34 Model has the terminals closer to the middle of the battery, so it is kind of hard to say if things would fit...
(Hopefully someone has fitted a Yellowtop to their VE and confirm everything is OK ???!??!!?!?!?)
Cheers
As above said or get yourself the D35.
no. then they are on the wrong end.
edit: didnt refresh before posting.
all i can say is i see a lot off the exide spiral wound batterys. the orbital ones made in the usa are faulty. and seeing both usa batteries and thailand made. ill go for the thai made. usa made is crap quality. and i see them at the factory
Optima Yellow Top (D34) fits perfectly without any modifications and are the best battery you can fit into the VE's. It's also the standard battery fitted as part of the police pack. Which replaced the underperforming #2 battery setup.
Some interesting reading, cheers
Just had an Optima YellowTop fitted to my VE. The posts are in a different location which means you just have to straighten the right angle metal on the positive and negative cables to make it fit. It also helps if you undo the ground bolt and spin the terminal around to give a little more slack. The ground terminal has a right angle "pin" which needs to be straightened too. The main problem was that the D34 is not as tall as the standard battery so the clamp that goes over the top of the battery is about 16mm higher, therefore not holding the battery at all. You either need a spacer under the battery to raise it OR we used a piece of timber 170mm long, 90mm wide and 18mm thick on top of the battery and under the clamp which held the battery very securely.
Also, some extra info that might be helpful if anyone searches for it... The idle (quiescent) current of my Calais is 1.2A upon locking it, then dropped to about 650mA, then dropped to about 450mA, then dropped to about 250mA over 5-10 minutes, then after about 20 minutes went into sleep mode of 50mA.
Hope that helps anyone thinking about a yellowtop. YellowTop is the preferred battery if you may be running your battery low quite often, like with a stereo. RedTop is a starting battery.

I thought about the D35 but I wanted the extra capacity of the D34![]()
