I've got a Series 2 SIDI V6. Cut the center bits out, replaced with straight pipes and put 2.5" mufflers on it. Sounds pretty good for a 6.

    Ok here's the deal.

You have a V6, if you want it to sound like a V8, buy a V8.

There is no chance a V6 will sound anywhere near or as good as a V8.

You can't get a loud note which sounds crisp and not droney on a V6. You either have loud and droney or you have quieter and crisp.

    You can't get a fkn V6 to sound like a V8 because it's not a V8.

you will never get it even close.

You've got a better chance of getting a boxer 4 to sound like a v8, or a bicycle.

SIDI's sound like whipper snippers. Man i wish i had Spark Ignition.

    The best way is to:

1- find a mate who has a V8, or hire one for the day.

2- Set up a stereo recording device near the exhaust, and record for about an hour.

3- Get a really sikk system (unless you already have one) with fully sikk subbies.

4- Replay it on your ipod and do laps past as many hectic doods as possible.

5- Reel in all the cash savings of not running a V8 in the city.

i love hearing people say "why didnt you just buy a V8" well because insurance would go through the roof and eastern states people arnt aloud them.
best thing to do to your v6 is drive it til u can afford a V8 so u can have a cool noise and all the bitches in the world OR
get an exhaust system put in and have a nice sounding V6 and waste money on an engine that will get smoked at the same price as putting a V8 in
and yes i do own a SV6 190kw VZ (insurance reasons)

Im simply running a Manta 2.5 inch cat back with both mufflers and sounds good enough for me, no rumble but sounds sporty with a nice tune, also my mate is running a stock exhaust with 3 inch dumps and no rear mufflers and that sounds mean but has wicked drone.
honestly save for a v8 and dont bother with a v6 engine. thats all im doing until im over 25 and insurance doesnt cost a lung and a liver!
