Today I went into Pedders suspension to grab a quote on a set of springs to lower my series 2 sv6. The bloke was pretty cool and quoted me $750 - something fitted, but also mentioned there are only 2 sizes of springs you can get installed (i understood there were 4?). I asked how the ride was after the mod, comfort wise, and he said pretty average but suggested getting front and rear (26mm/22mm) sway bars fitted to counter that problem.
Finally he suggested scrap the whole idea of just springs and sway bars and gave me prices for coil overs fitted ($1830 for coil overs/ $170 labour).
My question is, if I can decide on a good height for the springs, would it be better to go down that path, with or maybe without the sway bars, or is it worth spending the extra $500 or whatever it is to get the coil overs fitted, the Pedders fella mentioned the coil overs would do the same if not a better job than just springs and the sway bars, plus they are of course adjustable..
Hope I've given all the information you guys need, thanks.
Send Greg from GSL (sponsor) a PM. He has a bunch of options ranging from just springs to track set-ups that he can supply you -
if it's just a lower look you're after, ask him about a King/KYB combo - it will ride well and be less than half the price of the coilovers. Springs only is not good - any springs - as the shocks aren't matched to them.
Pedders - Straight advice, specialist you understand and... No Bull... but we will take you to the cleaners and rape your wallet.
Cheers Tin, so if I wanted to just get fixed springs I'd need to also buy shocks to match, what do you think is a rough price for springs/shocks (and whatever else I need) fitted, so I don't go and get my wallet raped by Mr Pedder.
like that is it darcon?
wtf?I asked how the ride was after the mod, comfort wise, and he said pretty average but suggested getting front and rear (26mm/22mm) sway bars fitted to counter that problem.
Go somewhere else man.
Dont get me wrong, I have Pedder's springs on both my cars and love them, but this knob is doing a pathetic upsell and nothing more.
You asked how's the ride 'comfort wise' and he suggests sway bars?!? Bollocks.
You much you looking to drop car?
As already suggested new shocks is the better option when changing springs, but then again I didnt drop my car too much and I'm still using stock shocks.... and they work fine for me. Tinny is right, they wouldnt be perfectly tuned to work with the different spring rate, but in my opinion they work perfectly fine for normal daily use. No hitting bump stops, ride not too bouncy, works just fine.
Also, the $750ish quoted is too much. Should be around $600 fitted, including wheel alignment.
Coilovers for a daily driver is overkill, dont do it.
As a base start. Kings SSL (front and rear) Monroe Short body shocks to match the spring is a very common setup for the VE. SSL will not drop the car ridiculously casuing the underbody to scrap on speed bumps and steep driveway. The ride will be a lot firmer than stock but not as much as other setups. So expect a little harsher ride.
As mentioned by Tinny, speak to Greg from GSL (forum sponsor) about options and pricing. Average cost for this type of "Fixed" setup costs between $980 and $1,100 supplied and installed inc wheel alignment.
As mentioned this is a common basic setup you can get better shocks to work with the springs. Unless your going to be doing a lot of track days coilovers will be an overkill.
My 2 cents worth..

I've got Pedders in mine (sports rider I believe) and no probs. Haven't changed the shock yet but may need to one day. The ride IMO is fine and no I don't have sway bars.
Please don't missunderstand me... Pedders kitt is actually quite good, actually I have their coilovers on my track beast with sports rider in my VX Clubby, it the business tactics Pedders applies to everyone as they try & upsell that does not fly with me any more... so I'm over the company.
They(2 stores, 1 franchise and 1 Pedders owned) have even tried to tell me that my car(At the time a brand new VE 2010 GTS with less than 5k on the clock) was unsafe as it required $2500 worth of repairs, therefore illegeal and were not prepared to give me back my car... that was until a 6'4, 110KG, very pi**ed OFF wog(Me) and a fricken baseball bat took his car back.
I see your point.......I actually didn't get mine done at Pedders so didn't have to deal with them directly. Lucky for me it seems![]()
Yes speak to greg. Every now and again they have suspension happy hours, before Christmas Bilstein shocks and king springs for VE were going for just over $1300!!! I cashed in and bought DMS coilovers though.
Hey, i just put SL front and SSL rear king springs in my SV6 ute and kept the stock shocks... i would recommend not to do this! Looks great but ride quality is very very poor!
Thanks for all the replies, I didn't think I needed the coil overs myself but liked the idea of being able to adjust them if i wasnt happy with the height, I'm not sure where else to go in Perth for suspension but I'll give Greg a PM and see what he thinks.
How much will the car drop on SSL front and rear? I want the tyre to sorta sit just below the guard, not quite tucking, not sure if this look will make the car scrub at all, I'm green to all this![]()
Greg will supply you the gear - you can get it fitted basically anywhere, you just need to have a good wheel alignment done afterwards.
GSL prices are here for King/KYB or King/Boge (boge would be a more plush ride) KYB / Kings Commodore Lowering Packages!
Expect to add around $200 for installation and alignment.
I had just lowered Pedders springs before doing the coilovers
