I am currently driving a 2009 WM Caprice, the car comes standard with tyre pressure monitors and sensors in each wheel
The tyres on the car at the moment are cheap rubbish (unknown brand), As I have a mint set of pre VE R8 wheels, I want to put tyre pressure sensors in the wheels and go to a set of 245 X 40/19 P Zero tyres
I can get the new sensors for about $45 each (no problem there)
My problem is that I have been told two different stories
1. If I get them fitted, I will have to get the car reset using the 'tech 2' programme at the Holden dealer to get the new sensors to work (1 hour)
2. I have been told that they are almost 'plug n play' but every time I take off a wheel. I have to go through a sequence to mate the sensor up to the monitors again
Has anyone done this? If so, What are the facts?
If all the current sensors are working you can transfer them to the new wheels. Just tell the tyre fitter to be very carefull removing and mounting the tyres as they are easy to damage.
1. New sensors will need to be linked to the TPMS module with tech2 and the TPMS tool.
2. As long as the IGN is off I dont see why you would have to relink the sensors. If you transfer the old sensors to the new wheels you will have to make sure the sensors end up in the same position as they were originally ie LF RF LR RR.
Silver Certified.
You don't need Tech 2 to relearn the tyre pressure monitors, or learn new ones. Have a look at this post
Got the WM tyre pressure monitoring system working again.
for how to 'learn' them yourself. It will help if you have an air compressor at home.
$45 is a pretty good price for a new sensor, if it is actually new. Where from?
Make sure that you use the same type of sensor that came with the Caprice originally. There's at least two versions that I know of.
I had a lot of problems with my sensors and ended up replacing them via trial and error and resetting them via the link above (saves $100 odd... :-) )
I have an 07 Caprice that has sensors with the metal stems and it took me ages to find replacements as they are no longer available from Holden (they only have the rubber stemmed ones).
This guy has been selling single units on EBay, I contacted him and he is expecting a shipment of about 100 brand new units (from the factory who supply GMH) in the near future and they will be available in lots of 4.
Currently he has no stock, only the rubber stems to suit the TPMS.
Click the link below and make sure you read the blurb under the listing on EBay
