Anyone else had this problem had a noise in engine (knocking kind of sound) I suspected piston slap however Holden rang to tell me it's the harmonic balancer the field fix told them it needs a cold start to make sure the problem is solved and they have done that and it's all good so Time will tell I guess.. Apparently it's becoming a common issue...

Mate I think your being told a lot of porky-pies (lies) from your Holden Dealer. A wobbling harmonic balancer (depending on how old /klm it is/has done) wont be the source of the cold start clunking/knocking/piston slapping noise that a few of us have been experiancing. That is if your trying to relate this issue to other threads in the section. I've had numerous balancers changed due to failure however they did not change the outcome of the other issue.
My new L77 came with a new balancer on it from factory and was stuffed just after 1,000klm. I was told by the Holden tech it needed to be replaced. When the car was booked in for the Holden DSM to listen to the "HOT" engine tick for diagnosis the follow week, they wanted the car over night for a cold start. When they started the car in the morning (with the 'crook' balancer still on it) the engine made no piston slapping/cluncking/knocking noise of any kind.
The only fix for a stuffed balancer is for it to be replaced. The worse that can happen with a 'crook' balancer is it throws the main belt at high rpms.
You did state that the noise coming from your engine bay was not like ours (discussed in another thread relating to piston slap/knocking) so hopefully this has soved your noises and you can get on with enjoying the car....
Do let us know if it solves your problem. We need to hear at least one good story!!!... hehe
Cheers
Phil
mine was f#!k after 1000ks on my l77 replaced with new one under warranty been fine since now has 20000ks on her only other problems have been new clutch and lsd banging one every now and then
Update: Took the car to Holden on Tuesday they fitted a balancer that afternoon and started it Wednesday morning and said noise is gone, I said ok AGAIN benefit of the doubt so I started the car at the dealership and what do I hear? A faint Knock knock knock knock knock knock knock" my lifters aren't noisy no "clacks or tacks" just the same noise the gen 3 5.7 made... Just not as bad which has me convinced it's piston slap that loud noise old dog had gee if I had that I'd snap it. Anyway back to Holden with me taking the keys home this time.

My s2 had the same knocking sound, mostly evident on cold start.
I've had my harmonic balancer was wobbly from new, but I've had that tightened. The slightly audible knock sound when warm was passed off as exhaust resonance by the Holden technician.
What a retard lol some Holden techs are unreal.. I won't be accepting anything other than the conclusion that internal engine parts are knocking.

Very interested in how u go, I wanna chase it up more myself but we really can't do without the car whilst they look at it.
It's going back Monday for a tuesday cold start.. YET AGAIN... They don't give a shit about my exhaust or intake I've asked them.nor should they anyway.

apart from the fact piston knock makes a nice new car sound like a truck, how detrimental is it to engine life?
