Is the ESP thing in the centre console a button to turn it on/off

what part of the system does it take out,ABS,EBD,traction control,body control?

id hazard a guess that it disables the ESP...
its function is probably explained in the owners manual

Disables all the features of ESP except for ABS AFAIK.

Turning the esp off is pretty much that, but turning it off will not allow you to throw car into a corner and make it around smooth, the car will not apply braking pressure to the brakes to help hard and quick steering. Probably best to leave it on as it could mean the difference between a minor or serous crash.
