Tough sounding exhaust on SS for under $200
G'day all
wanted a tougher sound out of my SS without forking out $1000's and without the drone or being too loud.
Looked at all the bolt-on rear mufflers on ebay, but at $400 wasn't convinced that I would get what I wanted.
Was also reluctant spending money at an exhaust shop and ending up with something that was either too loud or too stocky sounding.
So I figured being a bit of a do-it-yourself-er, I make my own... and do a bit of trial-and-error until I got what i wanted.
Bought a couple of flanges, a 180 degree mandrel bend, 2 1/2" pipe, and some 1/2" rod for hangers. Cut the bend in half to give me 2 x 90 degrees (half the price of buying two 90's), bit of measuring, cutting, welding, grinding and painting and ended up with a straight through system just to see how loud it would be.
Didn't take long to figure out the droan and popping was too loud, so got on to e-bay and bought a couple of new stainless cannon's with 2 1/2" in and 3 1/2" out for $90 for both!!.
Bit more measuring, cutting and welding and got exactly what I want.. a tougher sounding, tougher looking, non-boy racer-ish exhaust... FOR UNDER $200!
I know all you purists will say that I should of gone for a 2 1/2 or 3" cat-back ... and if I had the spare cash I would have... but at under $200 and with around 6 hrs in total, I'm pretty damned proud of what I've done, and just as happy with the outcome.
Showed the guys at the exhaust shop where I bought the bits ... couldn't believe that a "back-yarder" could do such a job.

Thanks Cous!
The compressed mp3 and ****ty mic on the digital still camera doesn't do it justice. Very deep throaty sound, and actually probably not quite enough back pressure, which is why you get the popping when you back off.
The volume is spot-on for me ... throaty... not too loud ... bit more depth ... little droaning. (wish my wife was like that!) KIDDING!

I would have thought someone that could afford a $50k? car could afford more than $200 for an exhaust

why spend money when he doesnt have to?
maybe its a company car?
maybe hes got other priorities in life apart from his car?
maybe hes smart and saves money instead of blowing it all on the car?
who knows
