Noise in Gear Box

I have a Calais but I get an intermittent noise come from the gear box which will come on when you put it in gear,I assume the noise is electrical as you do not have to move the car for this noise to come on and when you take it out of gear the noise stops, I have had a look under and there is a large cable plugged into the back of the box. What I would like to know is what does it do and where does the other end go to??

The noise sounds like a whine or ZZZZZZZZZZ if you say that in one line.
A bit like touching two electrical wires together
