Default What is that ugly black plastic box at the intake?

Hi to all,
Normally spend time on the VR Calais V8 thread, but new to this thread as I just bought my wife a new VE Omega. It came with 21 inch wheels, lowered by Heasmans so it looks nice, pitty though it doesn't have a 6 litre V8.....!!! so lets not go there. Although one can clearly see and feel the difference in quality, handling etc between my old VR Calais and this VE, its also rather hard to justify 14 years of development, and while not exactly sure of what I expected to see such as improvements/features etc, it has been 14 years, perhaps a jet turbine under the bonnet may have excited me, anyway enough raving.

So my question is, does anybody know or can explain the purpose of that big ugly black plastic box residing between the air filter and throttle body?

They couldn't have made it a more strange and disfigured shape if they tried.
I'm sure it has a technical purpose so please enlighten me.

cheers.

I know the thing you mean. The VZs don't have it...

TBs are getting bigger and with them the induction noise is getting louder. So I think Aggro is right about them being there to quieten down the induction noise.

Just get rid of it and get a decent CAI. OTR is ideal, but pod is a good substitute. Anything is better than Holden/HSV OEM.

yes it an intake resonator, there are much larger and weirder shaped ones around.

nearly all petrol vehicles of today have one or two and sometimes 3

Not sure if you want more detail - they are called helmholtz resonators, and are tuned to control specific frequencies. European manufacturers have been using them for many years.

It might be more information than you want, but there is a good explanation on Wikipedia ( Helmholtz resonance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )
