Thanks guys, my neighbour tells me I'll end up washing the paint off it, It's all stock and as a family car I need it to have good maners. Although I'd love to do a cam, exhaust, intake.... maybe one day.
I have thought of putting one of those nice curved looking pipes from the TB to the MAF... I'll look into it...
Cheers
Phil
I live in a street where the only time people wash their cars is when it rains on it....

Got bored today so I thought I'd mod the engine cover....
I know alot of people simply remove it altogether (because they are a big heat trap) or do the split (VZ) type. I thought why not slightly redesign it to allow the heat to escape. I think it turned out ok in the end. Anyway here are some pic I took with the iPhone this afternoon.
Cheers

Gee, that mod is quite detailed.. I was aiming for the split engine cover look - exposed inlet manifold...
It wasn't to difficult at all. I just used a small drill bit and a hacksaw blade. Then filed the edges. I left the front and rear sections to maintain some stiffness in the cover.
You could take out a little more from the last panel but it would have involved a little more effort and I was using an old blade (wasn't the sharpest in the shed!!.. LOL).
Actually what you could do - like in your photo, is cut out like I have and then insert the mesh - instead of having all those little rivets showing you would fix it from the sides...?
Thanks mate... I did it this afternoon while the wife was out with the oldest daughter and I had my son playing in the backyard.... What a way to kill a couple of hours...
Nice.. sounds like a good day, mate!
I was working today - but it's not really work when the work is a Ferrari. 1978 Dino. Gorgeous old girl!
I decided tonight to cut completely through to the back of the engine cover just leaving the front bit with the 6.0 Liter emblem. I was suprised how rigid it still sat on the top of the motor. Doesn't vibrate or make noises. It will allow even a greater amount of heat to escape. I have updated the pics (the first 2 pics had the section at the back and 2 pics on the right with the cut right through).
I priced the VZ 6.0ltr split covers this week, it was going to cost me $240 for just the covers. Then I need the ball top support posts (which screw into the rocker cover) they were $15 each (not retail prices btw). In the end I thought I'd leave it for now.
I quite like the silver contrasting to the black and white of the engine bay. I have seen some colour coded to the cars paint and IMO I didn't think much of White engine covers - it can get rather dirty under there... LOL.. In the end I think it looks better cutting all the way through. Just can't yank it off when you want...
btw does anyone know the paint colour (other than just silver) used on the covers? I have a couple of little scrapes I would like to touch up.. Spray can would be good.
Oh, Tinny btw I was having the new plenum fitted on Friday and my mate ended up running out of time. He is off next week so I wont have it done till the week after. Was hoping to have it done by the cruise for you to check out.. He was telling me that for some reason they are a bit of hit and miss - getting them to sit hard up against the windscreen. He'll have a look at it we back at work..
At the moment the new bits are in the boxes still at Holden...
very neat job.. well done
