how frequent have your oil changes been.
old oil will get gummy and make bad deposits blocking oil galleys etc. a good indication would be look at your old head under the rocker cover. is it really gummy with grit etc. or is it lightly colored with oil stains etc. this would kinda let you know how it is through the rest of the engine. how did you feed your turbo from the grommet on the exhaust side if the block(series 2 Rb30) or a t piece from oil sender under intake plenum? chances are if your gauge aint working and your getting no feed it could be blocked oil gallery on sender side.
    Good luck bud

c pic for reference, very dirty head not many oil changes

hmm weird... possibly the oil pump impeller has shit itself... i feel its quite unlikely though....you should not have to prime the oil pump.
I know this is stupid but hows your oil level. rb30s take approx 4.7 litres and are known to hold a bit top end
whats the condition of the head u put on it. possibly oil galley blocks?? or not possible ??

if the rb30 block has the bung on the passanger side for oil feed and a larger one under it above sump for return as well as a water feed bung for turbo. then its a series 2 block.
these were not featured on series 1 block therefore you had to drill into a galley or t-piece off the oil sender.

so your getting a trickle through your oil feed hole?

remove your oil sensor just behind the oil filter and see if anything pumps out

your blocks oil gallery runs along the drivers side, you then have a shaft running between piston 3 and 4 to your oil feed (this runs in line with the oil filter)

if you are not getting much out of both then your problem is at the oil pump or a block in the gallery from the pump to the main oil gallery

you say you have been running the engine with 18+ psi is the oil pump the turbo or na one? might be pushing the limits of possible na one and its gave up just before you decide to change heads

basically a vacuum line is fed from compressor side of turbo to wastegate side port. once the psi in the vac line/intake gets up to wastegate setting say 12psi it opens wastegate so exhaust pressure is purged b4 the turbo and keeps the psi at a limit. then u can have a manual boost controller inline b/w compressor and wastegate to adjust the pressure in the vac line(but manual boost controller will not adjust below the spring setting in the wastegate) so if its a 12 psi spring in wastegate the manual boost controoler will not work under 12 psi only over it (there is your wastegate lesson :P)
    Catchin' what im throwin'???

yeah thanks man thats what i thought just wasnt shaw theres a few was to hook em up thats the way i got it setup now you can also hook boost to both ports witch makes the gate stay shut a lil longer due to greater presure so ive heard
