they work on pressure/vacuum.
heat up coolant overflows....then when engine/radiator cools creats vac and sucks back in to radiator.
i dont think it matters where it sits.
google it..search is your friend

If you look at the VX onwards in the V6 model, their overflows are all mounted inside the front guard.
