As stupid as it may sound its true.If the vl had a 202 or other similar boat anchor power plant i simply wouldnt own one.How many other vl owners out there are the same? Do you own a vl becuase of the the way it looks or becuase it has an rb30?
the germans designed it, the aussies built it, the japs got it moving and the wogs got it dosing...
its the combination that draws me in
love the handling aspects and body shape with massive potential and reliability due to the motor
ok for me its everything about the vl the look, the engine, how cheep you can pick one up.
doesnt cost much to make a vl nice.
and the massive potential for power that these cars have if you read car magazines i forget wich one but there was right up why hey are so popular. i mean how many 10 second vl's are out there and how many more are in the process of becoming one
well ive only recently got my first car and its a vl and i didnt really want a vn + model because my mate has a vr with a exhaust system and the sound it makes didnt really make me want one but the sound of the vl was good and i also like the way they looked and my mechanic said that the engines were really reliable and ive been happy with it so far
first car i bought was a vl, i was none the wiser of the engine
bassically it was a manual commodore which was all i wanted and the body shape was the most appealing too me
3rd vl later and still my fav commodore
have a vs and vy ute currently as dailys and they just dont match the vl
bought it for the look really,
loved the kick, the front and the genral shape,
not too cube yet not too round
later on i was to learn about the motor and potential which was just a bonus in my books![]()

397xxx k's and still pulling strong..
not much I can really add to that
i swapped a r31 skyline for mine, not that i didnt like the skilly but the vl is 5speed and has 18s...
but then again if it was 202 i would of kept skilly

I own one because the Nissan 3.0L is an excellent engine. Once you get the wiring and electrical issues sorted the VL is a great little car.
It pays to make sure that you have a aftermarket radiator too as the alloy heads have a bad reputation due to the insufficient airflow around the stock designed rad.
This makes the VL pretty unsuited to doing any kind of towing but a well maintained VL with a good radiator is pretty much bomb proof and runs on the smell of an oily rag by today's standards.
i payed 500 bucks to kick ass over a 50,000 dollar car, 4 sure, its a great ride!!! was a beast back in the day, its a beast still today!!!!!!
Theres only one engine in the VL in my eyes, and hats a 304![]()

for me its looks and a killer engine which is very easily and cheaply fixed or upgraded. sleek looking its a must for a commodore owner. :P
i wanted a vl, because its the last of the early style, and pretty light,
i wanted a calais, because of the rear bootlip, eyelids, mags and interior.
dont care that its a nissan engine, yeah its more powerful than 202 but i would have bought this car no matter which of the 3 engines it had.
mine just ticked over 200,000. i know 2 of the 3 owners and they looked after it.
This is good site to watch.I found it informative as I have been researching a lot lately on such matters such as you talk about.
Same boat for me, I was fortunate enough when finishing school to be offered a nice resprayed/straight sl with aircon, manual and an okay stereo. I jumped at it.
Only to later learn all about the Nissan engine, suprised how many people still have no idea thats what powers it.
On my second one, it's been a great run, but I don't think I'll get another, I think I just want something with some better economy and an interior that's not creaking/falling apart etc.
I picked my vl up for $700, its an auto but soon to be a manual, i took it from vic with a trailer all the way upto adelaide through adelaide hills picked up another vl limited edition and towed it all the way home again...IT WAS GREAT.....
Purple one is mine what i towed it with (Abit dirty in that pic)
White one is the limited edition i picked up for $750
