VL Airbag

Hey Guys,
ive just bought a vl calias and my dad will not let me drive it unless i install an airbag as it is turbo'd i have one on my vr which i am wrecking could i get that one fitted to the VL?
and if so around how much for?

Are you serious? Airbags arent plug and play devices. Im pretty sure not one VL had an airbag, so the whole lot would need to be engineered. Youre better off covering the steering wheel with foam padding lol

the vl never came with a air bag so doesnt have any features to support it

why do you need a air bag anyway?
upgrade the brakes and put good rubber to the road. make sure the shockers are good and then you shouldnt need one as you will stop quicker

not for the L bud....
so much would need doing in order for sensors and computers etc etc and would cost and arm and a leg dont bother. as what 5 speed said none were manufactured with airbags so no provisions and so forth.

the VR VS commodores were the first to come with airbags so the vl never had one and the cost to do such a thing isnt worth it so just do as others have said and spend the money on good brakes, tyres and suspension and you will be fine

man - you don't want an airbag in a car that wasn't designed for one - that thing will knock your block off.

having said that, if you want a purely technical answer;

There is a module that controls the airbag that is mounted under the drivers seat of a VR/VS commodore - the airbag system is pretty self-contained, in that the module has a G force meter inside of it, and it's installed with the arrow on th emodule pointing to the front of the car.

the module has wires that go to the airbag to deploy it, it also has wires going to the ignition switch to power it.

The only other hook ups are to the dash light and diagnostics port.

I imagine th emodule has a pre-defined G force level at which the airbag deploys.

if you were retro fitting, you'd need to consider where your head would be in a stack, and whether the thing would snap your neck backwards and break your face if it's not positioned correctly.

also keep in mind that the airbag gets DAMN hot after deployment - and will want to set fire to anything around it.

There are companies that sell retrofit airbag kits, so by saying that it can't be done is incorrect. A lot of work involved though and a few thousand dollars.

Speaking of smashing, I found these vids quite appropriate. In saying that, I now have a phobia about airbags! I think I would rather just take my chances with a seatbelt alone than getting hit in the face with one of these.
