White smoke sounds like engine oil? Not trans oil.. How do you know its trans fluid is it dropping or just assumed so?

    Thats really confusing lol

white smoke generally is either head gasket failing or cracked or warped head, intake manifold or gasket, or cracked block. water in combustion chamber causes white smoke

WikiAnswers - What would cause white smoke to come out of the tail pipe

check link for a but of knowledge

Its using trans fluid like theres no tomorrow, but motor not using oil and has good power.it only blows smoke after its been ideling for say 30 seconds then cleares up when i drive away,no smoke when when under constant power.maybe its wishfull thinking but a mechanic said it could be a dodgy soleniod in the auto sending trans fluid up to the inlet manifold and burnig out exaust.cheers DONHOMER

just a thought which I have had this problem before, maybe the trans is just dropping oil onto the exhaust, it still looks like its coming out the back when you drive and usually clears up when the car is on then drips again when you stop and the auto oil fills up the pan again which will again make smoke when you take off again and the exhaust heats up. Check your pan gasket and wipe it down, see if it had tranny fluid after the next drive. I cant see auto oil making its way into the motor.

you need to replace the vacuum modulator at the transmission, just follow the vacuum line down to it, eventually the diafram splits, get one from an auto parts shop as holden no longer stocks them, I had the same problem

wouldnt the car be missing if it was getting that much oil and the mod is sucking all the time so wouldnt it run even worse as you go, nevere really heard of someone having this problem thats all.

thats exactly what im thinking the daiphram is nackerd in it.i did see n/a modulators 40 odd dollars and turbo ones 66.

im looking at a similar problem but its very minor smoke but constant when idle but basicly fine under boost

Hey thanks for all the info guys its much appreciated!.Is the 'vacuum modulator' a bolt on bolt off change over? I've just bought a ELLOY'S VL repair manual and it has a photo of a 'vacuum diaphram' (is this another name for 'modulator'?) its next to the 'downshift soenoid' is that it? Also does anyone know where I can get a 'modulator' in the MELBOURNE area?cheers DONHOMER

Hi guys GOOD NEWS for those who need to know. I fixed my 'white smoke out the exhaust /disappearing auto fluid from slipping auto trans problem' it was the 'auto modulator /vacuum diaphram' got one from REPCO $69 bit expensive but anyhow its fixed.at first i thought the valve seals or head was stuffed, mechanic quoted $1000 to take head off and never said any thing about Modulator go figure! anyway to fix I just disconected vacuum hose and unscrewed old MODULATOR and screwed in new one ,about half a cup of auto fluid up vacuum tube to inlet manifold poured out onto floor!stuffed diapham! While i was at it i took the pan off the auto drained it and gave the pan a good clean before puting new fluid in the auto only lost the fluid that was in the pan about 1.5lt auto took about 3lt to top up .Now the engine and auto are perfect no smoke no slipping auto.So thanks to every one who helped on this Forum i saved a heap of bread and know how to fix this small but mysterious problem and feel bloody good about the acomplishment.cheers Donhomer

Default VL Auto needs 2 min warm up before it works

Hi All, my daughters recently purchased VL Calais has a trans. gremlin.
From a cold start it has a box full of nuetrals until it warms up a bit. (1 - 2 minutes)
Once the tranny wakes up it seems fine.
Wondering if anyone else has struck this?
Our mechanic said "common on VL's, don't worry about it. It's a good idea to warm it up b4 driving anyway". If that is the case then so be it but I've never heard of this problem b4. My VL Calais (handed down from daughter as the body is a bit rough) doesn't have the same problem and I'd hate it if it's something minor that fixing now, could prevent major drama in the future.
    Cheers.
    VL's rule!

    welcome to JC Pete...
only way really to warm a tranny is to drive it.(buy u cant as it wont select)
Outside Temperature can affect as if cold the oil viscosity is very thick and takes a while to warm through the torque converter as such and thin out.
basically can be a few things.
Trans pump starting to fail therfore pressure is low when cold
    Low on fluid
Stall converter Probs.(crack or leaking slightly)
Problems inside valve body, blocked or leaking seals causing fluid pressure drop..
As well as Vacuum Modulator failing

start by making sure the trans fluid level isnt too low or too high, an obvious thing thats often overlooked

Thx guys, trans fluid level is correct and there are no signs of external leaks.
I bought a Haynes manual for the car but the auto-trans section is about as helpful as pockets in undies.
Anyone know where I can locate an exploded view pic of a VL auto trans? (Legally of course)
I'm handy enough around manuals but this is one of few auto's I've had anything to do with. Maybe the current problem is why. LOL.
    Cheers, Pete.
