Hey im looking to purchase my first car so i can stop bludging off the rents.
Im on a budget but as it has to most people, the VL has caught my eye.
Just looking for some tips when looking at private sellers. What to look for etc etc. I've already seen a few around my area (Northern Beaches, NSW) but they were asking too much and had dodgy fix up jobs.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers, Gus.
search the forums bud there is another thread in what to look for...
basically rust around front a rear windows and in boot under carpet as well as where the boot light is under the lip.... along that lip to either side. as well as under the rubber seal for boot.
then the usual.... engine running not missing splutterering farting etc and Kms the old girl got on it. Engine number matches id plates and chassis number match id plates..... the basics..
expect to find something as they are 20+ years old.....
One thing Vls are cheap to fix easy engine management and of course you friends here at Just Commodres to help... Goodluck Gus
Cheers mate.
Yeah there is a local executive.. i'll post some pics soon.
They are asking $2000 negotiable and it apparently has under 140000kms on it. Has it been rolled back do you think?
It's a complete grandmas car with nil modifications.
Only problem is gathering funds.
Im sick and tired of driving my mums ford!
i have been there i got my vl from a wreckers but no motor and box are you after a drive straight away or are you willing to do some work to get it up ?
if your willing to work and restore head to the wreckers and look at what they have parts are easy enough to come buy and you caqn get them online too big bonus for me
have a think about it i went this option cause i hate front wheel drives and four bangers they are just no fun
good luck and good hunting what ever you chose
ishtata

ewww Dont say that word man.... Ford....
if its a grandmas car with low K's and hopefully one owner which it sounds like it is it would'nt be rolled back. No mods i would think its legit. and not been Flogged<-----(hard to find)
$1500 - $2000 sounds about right.
id go for it. Get some pics and show us
I'm looking at a drive straight away.
This executive has 4 months rego (i think?) to its name.
Here are the pics.
The description of the car is : Minor body damage, other than that good condition. Automatic. Cannot drive now due to age of owner. First to see will buy.
Mm yeah i'm no fan of FWDs either. I'm driving a 4.0L V6 Falcon Ute at the moment but i'm not really a fan of Fords. Can't really complain as it's the only car here..
Hopefully i get a VL soon! Gotta save for schoolies first![]()
quite straight looking bud. except for some bumper trims looks good and interior is clean. cant go wrong try get an engine bay pic for us if u can.
Yeah okay ill ask him for a couple more photos.
I'll keep you updated!
I called the guy up and he told me,
It isn't immaculate but it's in very good condition considering it's age and has a few odd dings here and there (result of his mum driving it). Engine is pristine and then he enquired as to what i planned with it. I told him it would be my second car / first car that's actually mine and i planned to modify it but basically i was looking for a stock car that hadn't been thrashed and what not and he assured me it's basically as stock as the day it came out.
Now, problem with the funding.
He said a few people had a look at it but he also said no one has put a deposit down and i'll be free to look at it on Saturday. Although i really do want to buy this car i don't have the money and i don't want to put his hopes up because if i could i would probably buy it tomorrow.
Feedback welcome
Thanks, Gus.
well i would go for it. sounds perfect for u. as for funding is there a way you could borrow cash from parents/relatives or even apply for a small loan for funding. If u miss out there will be others around. But as stated it sounds quite a good deal for the price as in quality/condition its in. hope you sort it out
Mm borrowing is kind of out of the question as they are in a bit of a financial situation. My relatives also live overseas so i only have my direct family here in Australia.
With the loan there is a company that advertises on TradingPost and they can do a $2000 loan that can be repayable in 1 year (Tax = $109, = $2109) or 2 years (Tax = $119, $2119). So it's a really low rate but then again i'm not sure about signing a 1-2 year contract as i don't have a stable income (part time job due to year 12). Also i'm not even 18 yet (about a month to go). So many complications! So interested in this car though!

Good news.
If i can get a decent deposit on this car i think he will hold onto it for me.
Just need to get the cash for the deposit now. I'm thinking 20% ($400)
yeh man it looks in good condition. just bought my first car which was also a VL, thing is mine is in better overall condition but the good old red paint was faided to the SH**house. but in saying that it did have an effed gearbox which sent me back another 750
if you dont have the money id just save up a bit and keep looking. and if they have had the car 4 sale a while chances are you can bargain them right down (y)
well thats my twenty cents anyways
good luck with it man
cheers
If funds are tight I am going to be boring here and say perhaps wait a bit. Yes this car sounds the goods but if it was easy to find then maybe there will be another soon.
Remember that after you buy the car there is stamp duty, Rego in 4 moths (that is Christmas time btw) which is another 600-800, insurance (don't even think about hitting the roads without 3rd party).
And that is assuming that you don't need any major repairs down the track.
I am not trying to kill the idea but just want to make sure you don't buy yourself more financial strife. My first car was a POS Cameria.
Mike
Thanks for the input.
Yeah i'm beginning to realise that if things go sour then im pretty much ***ed. Insurance will go under my dads name because they are asking about 3-4k for it which is ridiculous.
Just out of curiosity, how much is stamp duty and what does it actually cover? What is it actually for?
Stamp duty. Is the transfer fee that you have to pay to the state. What it is for is propping up the NSW economy. From memory (anyone can leap in here, or better still check the RTA) it is $300 + 2% of the value of the car.
As for insurance the way the insurance blokes see it. Young bloke with a VL, a car that weighs nothing with plenty of poke. And if you are planning to modify it you will have to look at shannons or something and then that 3K will look like chicken-feed.
My advice is never go into debt to buy a car, at the end of the day they are a hole to pour money into. Your $2000 car is now a 2000+3000+ 340 = 5340 car and now factor in fuel say $70 a week. Rego in four months $600 so after a year you will have paid $9580 for a VL. Now that is back of the envelope calcs but you see my point.
Depending on what you do next year, uni/apprentice/full time work will help you think about your finances.
Mike
Hmm, wow.
Okay well i don't know hopefully this guy will hold on to it. I'm going to have a look at it and take it for a bit of a drive as well to see how it runs but if it's not up to scratch ill just leave it.
That's a lot of money haha but i guess all in good time!
As for my future, either take a break off my studies for a bit and work or go straight into Uni. Not sure.
I own an Commodore, therefore, I own the road
Oh how i love rear wheel drive
I take it your from Northern Beaches as well?
I did! I worked in coles for about a year and also am currently working in a fast food joint.
But the "family financial issues" interfered with my saving.
Hopefully i get a hold of this car and you'll start seeing me driving around![]()
