I'm getting a VL 5 speed manual for a toy, but it has absolutely no grunt. I have always driven V8's, so I don't expect it to go real hard, but this thing would struggle to beat a Toyota Corolla. I'm thinking exhaust for starters, but are there any other options that are reasonably priced? Can you get the computer chip modified? I'm not after heaps of go, just a bit.
For starters whats the car got on it ie, exhaust size, how many k's etc...
if the exhaust is like real big it will be part of the prob, but really struggles to beat a corolla (is this corolla moded or something lol) it should eat it for breakfast lol
Which corolla are we talking about? 2006-9 compared to a 1988? VL. I'm not surprised.
Probably extractors, also might consider replacing Spark plugs, leads, coils and give it a really good service. An engine this old which might have been trashed, is not going far as it is with out maybe rebuilding it.
Mate, if it's sluggish and you haven't replaced parts for awhile check the codes on the Engine Combustion Control System (ECCS) fix any code related problems and then erase the memory and things should be sweet.
Most problems I've had are with poor connections on the battery, a build up of dust or grime on the "Crank Angle Sensor" (CAS) and / or the stainless steel "Rotor Plate" or poor contacts on the dizzy cap and rotor.
Check the timing is spot on at 15 degrees before top dead centre.
A lot of the time you can just erase the memory on the ECCS and your VL will rip. Mines a stock 5 speed and is quite quick, has no mods and done over 400, 000kms.

Thanks for the feedback. The car is bog stock, and does have alot of k's, but has been looked after. I will check all those things Holfast, hopefully it is something simple.
id be changing plugs leads cap rotor check the cas and see how it goes
maybe a 2 1/4 free flow exhaust, extractors, panel or pod air filter, cold air intake system, xf throttle body. These are some of the basic and not very costly mods. And will make quite a good difference to the cars performance and efficency.
check exhaust well the Cat.... probably the porceline/honeycomb looking Sh*t inside has broken and has blocked the exhaust from flowing freely will cause major power drop.
As stated above the ignition system/change fuel filter/check timing/clutch not slipping/no air leaks in intake piping/ clean out throttle body(take it off the car with the intake plenum and flush it out with fuel/diesel)
new panel filter...
man they are tough engines (they were made as cop cars, so knowing they would get thrashed) even if it has clocked up a few K's it will be a rocket keep on it u will get there
i agree with goon service first.but dont 4get it is just a n/a if i went back to n/a i would feel the difrence to.slap a turbo conversion on it like evry other muzza.do tha basics pod filter,extractors,2.5 inch, service and go from there.i remember the day when n/a vl 5spds went hard untill i steped into the efi 5ltr stuff now they feel like poo lol just go one better and smash the efi v8s and go turbo
when i 1st got my vl it was epic slow....after a bit of playin around i found i was only really getting about 3/4 throttle..i assume due to stretch in the cable over time and no one adjusting it .or it was just adjusted incorrectly...made a fair bit of difference getting full throttle..
the germans designed it, the aussies built it, the japs got it moving and the wogs got it dosing...
