Default not whirring but screeching/ grinding noise

My VL's been plagued with a loud screeching noise. An RAC patrolman said it was related to the flywheel or transmission. It took us a while but we replaced the transmission with a second hand one but the noise as still there. My son thought it might be the starter motor so we replaced that..still the same noise. It's certainly coming from the rear of the engine or front of the transmission. Before we looked for the transmission, a friend suggested it may be the flex plate so he checked that when we had the transmission out and he reckonede it was fine.
    Anyone got any suggestions (please).?

spigot bearing? possibly could be doing it on both trans have heard of this b4
starter motor would only do it when engaged as in starting the engine.

well the sound is like a 'rotating' sound if that makes sense, so yes strgas it does increase (get slightly louder) with acceleration, and then slow down (get a bit quieter) when decelerating. I guess it sorta changes note, but the main thing is when i drive it gets noticeably louder, and also yes when i put it into neautral it does all but stop, it becomes harder to notice, but if you are in the back seat and not moving, then it can be heard and i can also feel it through the gearstick if that makes sense too.

    Cheers guys.

Also, would i need a full replacement do you think? Or is there some way it might be able to be repaired or something ?

u could try changing the uni's. that might help. i got another tailshaft from the wreckers for $40 with a new bearing in it so i dont think they cost to much but might be more for a manual one.

Yeah i did hear that, would it be more expensive to change the uni's or to just replace the whole tailshaft ?

Probably more expensive to change the uni's. but if u get one from the wreckers it might be worse. I would change the uni's and the bearing
