My VL's been plagued with a loud screeching noise. An RAC patrolman said it was related to the flywheel or transmission. It took us a while but we replaced the transmission with a second hand one but the noise as still there. My son thought it might be the starter motor so we replaced that..still the same noise. It's certainly coming from the rear of the engine or front of the transmission. Before we looked for the transmission, a friend suggested it may be the flex plate so he checked that when we had the transmission out and he reckonede it was fine. Some more information, the screeching starts straight away (when the engine is started) and keeps going until it's turned off.
Anyone got any suggestions (please).?

spigot bearing? you seem to have changed everything else and I assume when you changed the trans you changed the torque converter aswell.
Nobody wants to play with me
Thanks. Looks like we replaced a transmission that didn't need it, probably same with the starter motor. My son (who's done the work) doesn't know where to find the spigot bearing. Does he have to drop the trany again?
yes and get it from bursons or autoparts
I'm in Western Australia and there's no Bursons or Autoparts.
double-check the flex plate when the tranny is out - around the crank bolts - look for cracks
well repco or whatever you auto parts are called over there!
ps how many threads are needed for this one bearing problem!
The other thread was an existing one , noy one that I introduced. I'm not the mechanic and I need as much info as possible to guide my son. He's reluctant to drop the trany again and I also started a thread in OldHolden where the response to the spigot bearing was
"spigot bearing is only a problem in manual cars. it supports the input shaft but only needs to turn when you have your foot on the clutch - think about it if the clutch is released your input shaft is turning with the crank.
same deal with the auto - the converter is bolted to the flexplate which is bolted to the crank. so any spigot with regards to locating the converter is along for the ride and cant possibly make a noise."
maybe there's a bird stuck in there lmao.. oh I crack myself up hahhaa
yeah i wasnt having a go at u mate sorry,
and yeah i think its the thrust bearing not the spigot but could possibly be both i would change them both whilst u have the gearbox out saves pulling it out again if it was the other one that u didnt replace
I've thought about the bird and it's a possibility but only if it's got an angle grinder.
