stock by stock 5spds, you'll be hard pressed to beat a vn..
if your gates are in good nick, and your half decent driver and know your car well enough ... forget the clutch and dry shift it. if you can develop the skill enough, you'll save a heap of time over the your mate using a clutch.
get the changes going at the right time so your revs dont drop so low your cars got no guts ... get a racing clutch fitted (mr-spares sells em on here for about $300 and i personally vouch for em) foot off the clutch and this thing GRABS!! dont even need to accelerate .. i was beating 900kg little jap buzz boxes left right and centre off the line with that clutch in my car.

Yeah advance your timing, run on PULP, new plugs, leads and get some good cold air induction going.

Make sure you keep your car serviced though, as a well serviced and maintained car is going to run alot better then some old crapbox. Not to mention you'll know that your car is in good condition.

I thought advancing ur timing will cause the valves to not shut properly. That could become a problem if ya got piston slack???

The advancing of the timing i hope u are talking about is the distributer. All you are doing is telling it to fire when the piston is only 75% or so up rather than 80-85% (not accurate, just an example) and because premium fuel burns slower and cleaner, so the fuels power is felt for longer providing more power.

If you advance the dizzy too much you will get detonation or pinging which is where the peak power of the flame is reached before it hits top and can burn a whole in your pistons in extreme conditions, not real smart. Sound is different in all cars, some it sounds like a rattle in the dash, others like theres a 12mm nut in the cylinder.

Advancing the timinng belt one tooth is not something a novice should mess with. Thats different altogehter.

Get the timing wrong with timing belts and if the clearance from piston to valve is too close, you can hit the valve with the piston or you will get a sound like the engine is firing in the air intake tube because the valve is open at the wrong time.
If you want more inches, STROKE IT!

Yeah, i thought we were talking bout advancing timing (as in timing belt) not the dizzy.
