Default My 5-speed VL Limited Edition

This is my new toy. It has factory fitted Calais dash, Berlina tail lights, 5-speed manual, central locking, air cond, etc. I don't think being a Limited Edition means much, so I will be respraying it and changing the color. I'm thinking of Interceptor yellow, or maybe that Morpheous purple. Attachment 72774

looks to be a berlina, maybe a dealer just put limited editon on it.....

has the cluster, black window surrounds, centre console high rise, sunglasses holder

does it have lights in the roof at the rear, one on each side?

It's a 1988 model. I'm guessing Holden threw the options onto a batch of the last VL's and called them Limited Edition, just to move them. The gearbox was noisy, so it has been removed. I got a gearbox out of a Skyline, so I hope it is the same. Some of the windows have been smashed, but that is an easy fix.

the front armrest/ locker usually breaks easily if hit due to the plastic usually being weak and brittle

How do I remove the plastic moulds on the outsides of the doors? They seem to be glued on. I want to get them off without breaking them, so that they can be refitted after the car is painted.

    there urethaned on (windscreen glue)
sit there with a sharp scrapper and slowly work your way along cutting as you go

as goon said do try pulling them too hard or they crack
its not impossible just time consuming

The engine is out, ready for the color change. I was going to go for the BT1 Interceptor yellow that the Turbo's came out in, but i'm now thinking about painting the car in the purple that the BA XR Falcons came out in. What do you guys think? Only got a couple of weeks 'till I decide.

Does anyone know how to remove the dash on these things? I have removed alot of bits already, but now I'm stuck. It looks like the air cond vents on the outsides of the dash have to come out, but I can't see how to get the buggers out. The plastic is very brittle, so I have to be carefull. Help please?

supercheap has a cheap universal steering wheel puller for like 12 bucks or less.

if ur really keen, go down there and look for the reapir/service manual.. it'll answer alot of questions..something like 30-40 bucks..

speaker covers are a little tricky

spin the vent side ways past the stopper so its aiming to the front and back of the car
then look upwards with a torch in the vent and there will be two screws holding the panel down,
remover the screws and the cover will slide towards you (rear of car)

or the proper way is too aim the vent downwards and feed your screw driver up slot on the vent into the area where the screw is
tricky at first but after quite a few times its easy,

take your time and look, if you need help or a pic just ask, i would be glad too help you out

Thanks mate. That is a great help. I only want to remove the dash so I can remove the wiring loom for the fuse box and air cond unit, as it makes it alot easier to paint the engine bay.

VL Berlina 5speed, just 1 more question. How do I remove the plastic trim from the fixed side windows. I have removed the stainless steel trim and the screw at the bottom, and the trim is loose, but I cant see if it is clipped on, etc. Thanks again for your help.

in the door edge there are 3 screws recessed into the panel,
    remove them also

then under the vent area there are clips into the car, 3 or 4 of them.
they are brittle normally but also the trim is too

best way worked out to get it off is slide the whole trim upwards along the angle of the rear window
this slides the clips off the which they mount into

then you can simply work the clips off the car with small screw drivers,
saves breaking them or the trim

good to see in the pic you got the dash apart too.

The engine bay is stripped and ready to be painted. Only problem is I can't decide on what color to paint the car. Was going for VL Interceptor yellow, but now thinking of Phantom Purple, which is a Ford XR6/XR8 color.

Engine bay is now purple. Won't be long 'till the engine, wiring, etc is back in, then I start on the outside of the car.

My car had a busted gearbox. I searched every car wreckers around my area, and couldn't find a VL manual gearbox, but I found a gearbox out of a Skyline (RB30 engine). I hope the gearbox fits, but my main worry is that I have to fit a new spigot bearing, as the previous owner had removed it. The spigot bearing is a brass bush, where most other manufacturers use a bearing. I think a brass bush is crap, and I am wondering if there is an aftermarket replaement of the brass bush with a bearing.

Hi guys. I've got the car back together after completely stripping it for a color change re-spray. The car turns over but wont start. I am getting fault codes for 11-crank angle sensor, 14-vehicle speed sensor, 21-ignition signal circuit, 24-neutral switch circuit, and 31- air cond fault. The air cond needs to be re gassed, so that is easy. The disy was full of water after sitting outside for ages. I cleaned and dried the disy but still no good. I know I could search for all the faults on this forum, but I was hoping someone might know straight up if there is an easy fix. The group of faults might have a common factor to them. An auto elec quoted me $85 per hour, so I would rather fix it myself if possible.
