Hey Guys,
Just picked up a VL yesterday with a RB20 Motor in it runs all good etc. just the Speedometer not working and the RPM is it just a missing wire?
The Bloke said its since the conversion to the RB20.
So what should I do now?
the speedo on a vl is mecahnical
a cable runs to the side of the gear box and screws in same with the cluster
look under the car on the drivers side of the gear box, there should be cable which screws into the side of the box
runs up the fire wall and into the cabin near the brake booster
if thats connected check the inside part behind the cluster, might came dislodged

have checked it today and everything is hooked up but still not working
what else could it be?
It could be a couple of things really.
There is a gear on the end of the cable that meshes with a gear on the output shaft of the gearbox. These are both made of plastic or similar material. If either one strips, then the speedo will not work (obviously). If you find that they are not stripped then it could be a case of the output shaft gear slipping or has slipped down the shaft and is not in contact with the gear on the cable.
The cable gear is easy to replace as it is just held on with a roll pin (from memory anyway). The Gear on the output shaft is a bit more involved. To replace it, you have to pull the rear gearbox extension housing off to get to the gear. You will lose a lot of gearbox oil in the process so just be warned. It is a good practice to replace the rear gearbox seal when you do this job as well.
If you want to see if the speedo head is working, remove the cable from the gearbox, take the plastic gear off and attach the cable to a cordless or an electric drill and wind it up. have someone watch to see if the speedo moves. If it does move then your problem is in the gearbox.
I hope this helps
