Rb30 blowing greyish black smoke????

Hi all I own an 86 Vl I have had the car for 1 And a half years now since I got it it's been blowing this greyish black smoke I have driven the car alot bout 40000 ks and no troubles with it I just wanna no if I should change the engine or not? And does some one no wat I have to change ( diff gerbox driveline) to upgrade to a 5.0l is there much involved ???? Any comments or help will be appericiated
