vdo temp sensor to suit 6cyl vl

hi all,

im installing a vdo eletric temp gauge in my vl and im not having any luck with a sender unit to suit.

ive got a sender here but its to long but looks to be the right thread, part no VDO 320.002
repco have sold me 3 different sensors now and none fit and i realy need this gauge working.

does anyone know what sender will suit a VL?

i was thinking that but it would be better to have a sender unit that matches the gauge i would think.

anyone know the temp range of the standard 6 cyl temp sender?

wat u mean by the range?

my mates has a gauge for his temp and wired too the original sendor his sits on like 70degrees and he thought that was high so he took too the mechanics and they said it was all good

all temp sensors have a working range that matches to the gauge, IE my VDO gauge has a range of 40c- 120c so i need a sensor with the same working range.
if you use a gauge with a range of 40c-120c and a sensor with a range of 60c-150c you will be getting an incorrect reading.

i might wire it up to the original sensor and see how it goes but id really like to know how accurate it is.

any idea how accurate your mates is?
would have thaught 70c normal operating temp would be slightly on the cold side especially for this time of year?

well i did a test with some hot water in a jug with a VDO sensor with a range of 40c-120c hooked up to a VDO gauge with a range of 40c-120c and my mates very expensive thermometer and found the VDO sensor to be spot on as you would imagine BUT when i did the same with the original VL sensor i found its out by about 10deg celcius (reads cooler than the water realy is) but that gets worse the higher the water temp gets. at a water temp of 80deg the VL sensor only reads 60deg.

well you can just hook it up and go by a rule of thumb

what temp was the water at when it was 10deg out

i geuss its... 40deg on gauge equals 50 deg water
60deg on gauge equals 80deg water temp
80deg on gauge equals 110deg water temp

just go by that mate

or if ya just put it in with the vl sensor and gauge hooked up to it see what it reads at normal running temp and note in your head what it is and if it goes up higher then that your in trouble

my findings with the VL sensor were
real water temp what the gauge said
50deg - 40deg
80deg - 60deg

so my next idea is to drill the sensor hole in the thermostat housing out bigger, tap a new thread that will suit a VDO sensor, bung a new VDO sensor in and all should be good, hopefully.

yeah that would work mate just be very carefull when you drill the bugger
