Hey just wondering what's the best engine oil for the rb30e![]()
How many kilometers has yours done? Do you mean which brand or which viscosity?
I have done 145,000k's, Yeh just wondering what brand is the best.
Oh ok. there is a poll on JC where people have voted and castrol is winning followed by penrite, but each to their own.
hey mate hows it goin i dnt know wat viscosity you need but i would recommend Nulon 100% synthetic i have used most oils and have found Nulon to suit my car the only other brand i would recommend is royal purple if your not worried about money
Nulon 5l is about $50 Nulon Products Australia - Engine/Motor Oils, Coolants and Additives
Royal Purple is about $110 Royal Purple Consumer Products
The royal purple website has a guide as to which oil suits your application
from factory the VL uses VALVOLINE,
I use valvoline 20w50 Classic, because of the age, but XLD premium and XLD are recommended.
Valvoline also have a site to select your oil for specific vehicles.
Nobody wants to play with me
I used Penrite SIN 25 in my VLT
LOL @ Royal Purple

"danja" I take it you dont like royal purple, Any reasons I only ask as I cant buy it in NZ so wod have to get it shiped over. I will check out the web sites now Cheers boys
I don't like it because it's a rip off. They have a very slick marketing department (no pun intended), which has made people think it's the bees knees in oil, but in fact they've had to reel in their marketing claims about how good their oil is because they were found to be false, and I seriously challenge anyone to prove that it's worth paying double or triple the price of any other decent brand-name oil.
At the end of the day it's your money, but if I were you I'd just get a Shell/Mobil/Castrol/Nulon 20W50 and be done with it.

Try to go for a Group 4 Fully Synthetic oil...
A Group 3 Fully Synthetic oil uses many additives to be classed as synthetic which break down over time. This causes a build up of sludge in the engine, and does long term damage. Group 3 oils are fine if you change them every 5000-7500kms...
The common G4 oils are Mobil 1, Castrol Edge Sport, Nulon, Royal purple and Redline. However its not all versions of these brands... but specific mixes. General rule of thumb is, if its less than $75 its not a G4.
Personally, i only ever run Mainlube 10w60 in my LS1, but at $240 its not exactly cheap. It is unbelievable stuff, so for a performance engine (worked LS1) you need decent protection.
just remember it is a VL RB30e not VS OR VX or an LS1.

I'm not saying Royal Purple is shit as an oil, I'm sure it works fine (though not as ambitiously as the manufacturers would claim). I would wager however that it's not any better than Mobil 1 or Shell Helix Ultra or any other "premium" synthetic oil. It's certainly not worth the price premium - in an RB30 of all things (no offence to the RB30 owners out there). I'd also be cautious about putting too much faith in the integrity of the scientific methods of Street Commodores magazine, who are the motoring equivalent of Women's Day...
On top of that, I'd also wager that someone willing to consider spending $100+ on a bottle of engine oil, is the kind of person who is going to be doing 5,000km oil changes, which completely negates the main advantage of using a synthetic oil in a street car - to extend the service intervals!
The best thing for an old tired engine, is a decent 20W50, or thereabouts, something relatively thick. There are plenty of decent, well price products out there which fit this bill. Nulon is certainly one of them.
