    Default steering question

under my VL steering rack is a length of black plastic tube that over the years had shrunk, causing 1 end to come away from its connector, I replaced it with a length of new tube

what does this tube do? does it equalise air pressure for the power steering, in some way nothing was leaking from it and it isnt mentioned in elleries VL manual

do all VL berlinas have power steering as standard?

yeah it just equalises the pressue between the two boots on either end, its only air. they only reason tehy are sealed together was to keep dust and dirt out. not saying your rack will shit itself or anything but dont be shocked if it does eventually (most have or are around now...) when it does looking at about $400 change over. like i said yours might still have 10 years left in it if your lucky so dont despair!
(my old one had the plugs for the tubes snapped off....)

this plastic tube and plugs seems likely to be damaged if any bushbashing is done with a VL as its down low and at the front

true but even everyday driving will do it. mine was certainly never 'bushbashed' its either plastic or rubber hose and heat, water, wear and tear shrinks and damages it. jobs right!

Something you might want to do is see if a tube of a VK power steer rack will fit as they are metal, if not I would go to somewhere like a brake place and see if they can bend up a piece of tube to suit for you.

    cheers
