Hi guys just wondering if you can shed some light on the problem i have with my brothers VL Calais.
Recently had air flow meter replaced, distributer, leads and coil and battery and starter motor. Initially the car would lose power mainly upon take off or doing turns and a few times the car would just not start. Then the next day or so it would just start and run like normal. Now he went overseas 3 weeks ago and car just wouldnt start at all. I couldnt hear the fuel pump at all, so today i checked the fuel pump relay and the efi relay by just pulling them out and powering them up manually and checking the switch contacts with a multimeter.
I also checked switching power in the relay holders on ignition, all fine. Still cranking but couldnt hear fuel pump. Checked underneath at fuel pump and with a power probe connected to positive wire of the internal fuel pump at supplied power, couldnt hear the fuel pump turn on. Then i got my brother to turn ignition on and bang the fuel pumps turned on and the motor started. There was a slight leak between the external fuel pump and a little metallic device which i think is a sender maybe. Tightened that and stopped the leak.
The car ran for about 15 minutes with a bit of black smoke coming out of the exhaust, and then just stalled. Now the fuel pumps do not turn on thus car not starting.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.
fuel pump is stuffed... by the sounds of it..
ok there are two fuel pumps, one inside the fuel tank and one outside, why would both of them not work or cut out at the same time, ive looked at the wiring schematic and they both run of the same relay?
correct. but are both cutting out or just the inertia pump. or just the highflow???
possibly be bad connection or the fuse not the relays??(banging it made it work so could be bad connection with spade connectors)
sounds preety weird man
ok had another look today, i can power up the fuel pumps, well one off them is definatly turning on, ill have to try and disconnect one and see if the connected one is turning on and vice versa, checked the fuel pump relay and can turn the fuel pump on from there manually, but the green wire from the ECU to fuel pump relay is not switching earth when ignition is on or on crank. So i earthed it temporarily and tried cranking while i can hear the pump but still no starting. I opened up the ECU and in one corner where there are 3 or 4 transistors i can see corrosion which looks like its caused by water damage. Now just thinking if there is a fault within the ECU and ive got the pumps turning on manually then once i confirm both pumps are on then maybe there is something else the ecu is not outputting ( maybe ignition system ) ???
