Screwdriver always worked for me, changed mine the other day and it came off easy as with one hand. Just use some cardboard or something under it To channel the oil into a tray or it will run all over everything below it.

if u only do them up by hand(recommended) u will never have a problem getting em off.
always make sure u have the rubber seal coming off with filter and not leaving it on block
unless u wanna pour new oil straight through engine.
and put some oil on new rubber seal on new filter with some oil on finger. so prevent this happening.

And no mate imo its easiest to get them off going in from the top, it is a bit awkward but an oil filter remover tool always comes in handy

I think hand tightening isnt enough and you would risk oil being lost thru the rubber washer, I use a filter spanner that allows the handle to turn outward, the space around filter is very tight

however you can buy a brand of filter from a big car parts place that still has the spanner reciever part on the end for a few dollars more, I cant remember the brand

agree that you must make sure the old rubber ring isnt sticking to the block, and do put some oil on the new rubber ring as it has to turn against the block while being tightened

helps to clean muck from the wire connector from the oil pressure sender thats nearby

FIRM hand tightening is more than enough for replacing the filter, as the rubber will expand when heated, I would not recommend using a filter tool to tighten it when replaced unless you are old and/or weak and/or frail! this will put you in the same position as the OP as he can't get the filter off and has felt the need to post here for assurance he is not going to stuff it all up.
HAND TIGHTEN THE FILTER FIRMLY WHEN REPLACING! NO PROBLEMS.

turbo bits dont make a diff as thats on hot side of engine(unless aftermarket plenum like rajab).... reach down under intake runners and undo it
only hand tighten does not need to be hell tight its easy i dont know why there is a thread on this is
unscrewing and then screwing back on...

    Nice Jatsvl ....classic :P
