Yesterday me and some mates were a bit outta town driving, then suddenly a fkload of steam and water was coming out from under the bonnet. Pulled over and when it stopped pissing water all over the ground opened the bonnet and had blown a radiator hose. Even before that happened it seemed to have run alot warmer than most VLs ive been in (around the half way mark most of the time) And i have been told by a few people that when i flush it out and put new hoses in that i should also replace the thermostat as i dont think it would have been replaced for a LONG time. Is there much involved in replacing it? Does the water pump have to be removed to take it out? Does anybody know what it involves? Cheers.
thermo stat is easy no where near water pump.its in the housing where your top radiator hose goes into motor.
oh and by the way vl's are supposed to run 1/2 temp
All my vl's have run just under a quarter sometimes and 1/8th of the temp gauge.
Piece of piss 3 bolts and the bottom radiator hose and your done.
yeah mine runs about 1/4 maybe a little warmer, 83c apparently

vl thermostat is bottom hose not top like previously suggested and other engines. it is very easy to replace nothing major just make sure all surfaces are clean before replacing.
my vl runs 1/8 of the temp and about 1/3 with the air con on it will go as much as 1/2 on 39+ degree days with aircon.
I found with the vl the flakey rust builds up on the water pump shaft and impellor restricting water flow.
also the engine fan (which is clutch driven) fail and not operate as it should.
Nobody wants to play with me
yeah i said the bottom hose and three bolts
no he ment me lol i was in that state of mind first thing today bad night.
a new thermostat gasket will be needed and the type that sticks to one surface makes the job easier
thermostats are cheap and dont last for ever
you probably should replace all the other cooling system hoses
