Sorry if this has already been answered.. unsure how to search the forums... but does anyone know how to check the power transistor.. any help would be appreciated... cheers![]()
oh a bit more info.. if this helps.. the car winds over but will not start and the error code is 21... im mechanically retarded and my husband has gone away... appreciate any advice![]()
error code 21 is ignition signal missing.
the ignition signal is generated by the crank angle sensor, which is inside your distributor.
You more likely have eithe ra stuffed sensor, or a bad connection at the plug for the sensor (very common = corroded terminals).
easiest way to check is to disconnect the 4 or 6? pin plug at the top of the dizzy, (the black plug that has a small metal clip holding it in place), give it a spray with some wd40, and connect/disconnect it a dozen times....
if your car starts, then the connection was the problem. if Not, you have a broken CAS and need a new sensor or just get another dizzy (cheaper/easier)
good luck.
as well as check the back of the plug under the rubber boot . sometimes as stated above these wires corrode off. and the plug spade connectors still look good,
so have a really good look with this plug..
if your CAS(crank Angle Sensor) is stuffed i have a thread on here in my sig on how to chage it over very easy done in 10 mins
goodluck man
Thanks for all your help guys.. Nothing has worked, so i assume its the crank angle sensor... Is there a way to test them?? Do you have any idea of the cost?? thanks again![]()
best thing is to go out to a wrecker and get a second hand distributor like previously stated...
that way you change the dizzy, crank angle sensor and power transistor
Hey guys.. it was the CAS!!! So thanks for all your help... I got a friend to install it ... as I'm mechanically challenged.. now it starts but it idles rough and when you accelerate its liek it surges (bunny hops kinda) if that makes sense.. would I now need to have the timing done??? Thats again guys.. Very much appreciated![]()
could be out...
did u replace whole dizzzy or just CAS
as i stated im my CAS thread u may have flipped the metal disk over.
grab a timing light and put your timing on 15 BTDC.
As well as it could be your Air flow Meter causing the bunny hopping and rough idle...
check all intake piping from AFM right up to Throttlebody is tight at clamps and there is no cracks in the rubber flex piece at the airbox end. any unmetered air getting drawn in will mix up your Air Fuel mix and run rough.
All vacuum lines are not leaking check rubber grommet around the hose in intake pipe to inlet plenum( near Flex piece) this can cause problems if air is getting in after AFM.
Leads/Plugs/Dizzy cup and rotor is clean or replaced...
Just a few things to check
Goodluck
its nothing major
