hey guys..
iv been looking through all of the old threads about the pod filters vs. CAI. Just wanted to ask, i have seen on a few vl's that you can hook up a pod filter to the car, but also buy some parts that give direct air intake from below, behind the bumper. Its hard to explain, but i believe you can buy parts that attach to the other end of the pod and then they go down and collect cold air just like a CAI system would work if following coastvl's instructions. im sure you can get this, just wondering if this would then solve the issue of needing to box up the pod in the engine bay?
If anyone has seen it or knows if it gives better performance id like to hear about it. Post some pics of the CAI setup if you have some, because id really like to see how to do it.
Cheers![]()
personally if your car is close to stock in terms of performance dont bother with either i had a pod filter and i didnt notice any gain at all and the stock box and filter will be just fine and there wont be any hassle with the cops
Yeah, i really need to make sure i dont make anything that could get the car defected (im still on my P's and i rely on my car to work). My car is an n/a calais, and its completely stock performance wise. I know that even a new air filter increases the performance of the car even by a small bit. I have also heard that the best way to gain a bit of power for a n/a calais is through the intake and exhaust. So i figured maybe doing the CAI with some PVC piping might still give it a bit of power.
Also, does anyone know the laws for mods in QLD? NSW and VIC are both differerent. But do i only need a box around the pod if i put one on?
mace engineering (who are on this site as a sponser) have a cold air intake for the vl that i believe would work good and it uses the pod filter in a box that takes up the area of the stock air box and the space behind the headlight and i believe that it would probably work better and be more legal than just a pod with no box
here is a link to the section and the Vl CAI one looks just like the VS CAI in the picture about halfway down on the page

COLD AIR INTAKE TO SUIT VB-VL - MACE ENGINEERING GROUP
build a cold air intake with pvc pipe to behind front bumper and get a K&N Panel filter.... 100 mm(4") piping
easy and lets her breath better and colder....
dont worry about POD unless you a boxing it in and running a cold air supply to it,,
if not boxed all it will do is suck in warm air from engine bay.
i made a cold air intake by using a vn airbox cut a hole in the bottom of it and run 3" stainless pipe into a cone collector just behind the front bar with a k&n panel filter and it works really well
heres mine i built about 2 years ago when i was on my L's, cost like 40 bucks in total for everything, including the pod metal everything lol.
CAI, this is spose to be illegal but 3 pink slips later and numerous time puled over no ones ever said anything
(note i made it for the orginal box but got rid of that when i was bored like a week later)

lol and suck up all that water from when the roads get slightly flooded then bang there goes your donk....
not likely. i have a CAI that goes lower then that on my VN. i live in NZ where rain and surface flooding on roads isn't uncommon. i've not had any issues in the 2 years i've had the CAI fitted
a CAI like this does improve economy and no doubt give a power increase. i've achieved the best figures of 6.9ltrs/100km in my VN with my current setup. this includes running 3.45 diff ratio which is better then the factory setup period![]()

you wont evan notice the difrence.just stick with your stock box and remove the snorkal part plus saves cutting holes in your car and its all legal
lols the hole illegal thing, not having water in your washer bottle is illegal, i've past 3 pink slips and god knows how many defects stations and hmmmmmm still no defects, and water, not a chance, i've driven though the worst storms in sydney and still fine, if your to affraid take the lid of lol
and theres a difference, plan and simple,
no water in a washer bottle and cutting holes in your car is alot difrent.
its a n/a vl youl never notice the difrence apart from it may sound a bit difrent so you think your vl has jumped 20rwkw but realisticly you may have jumped 0.4 of a rwkw not evan that its PLANE and SIMPLE!!!!.next thing use will all be doing is dumping ice in your air filter box or rigging up you're air con to the air filter box to get more cold air and alot more power lol.
well done for making your own cold air intake looks good . i just love all the eddy the experts on here its gunna get wet its gunna blow ya donk ffs . i just love the knockers on here . if you aint got something worth while to say or cant back it up shut up . well done for having a go holden 4 life and it would make a gain for sure .
i built mine years ago there was a slight performance upgrade nothing major though...
just getting a cooler air flow, i did notice the car ran smoother once i did this, as in more responsive on the throtttle etc etc....
this was when i was in melb and always had shitty cold weather as well....then i drove up here (QLD) and was raining most of the 18 hour drive,, never had a problem with water etc in the intake, tiny bit in bottom of Airbox but thats after hours of driving,,,,
Basically do what u want,(Its your car) but keep in mind the hole in the body work is illegal, but feds do turn a blind eye, just like cutting bigger holes in your parcel shelf to fit larger speakers is illegal, but once again
BLIND EYE...

lol.. I made a home made CAI for my old VL, using just 2 things:
1. The top of plastic cordial bottle, which was for the 'funnel' or 'mouth' shape, which I mounted behind a grill part of the bumper with a metal strap.
2. A short length of vacuum hose from one of those old vacuum cleaners, the ones with the wire coil in them.
I stuck the hose in through spout in the original air box, used the wire in the hose to hold it in place in the air box.
Plumbed the hose down through that gap between the radiator, and the body, where A/C tubes run, and connected it to the bottle top with a radiator hose clamp.![]()
Guess how much that cost me?![]()
at least that was legal lol and free.
How illegal is it to cut the hole in the car? What is the law it is breaking? and can they even check it?
Well, actually, no. Like I said, it was still the original air box, original spout, the hose only took up about half of the opening of the spout.
So half of the air taken in to the air box was from the engine bay, the other half would of been 'drawn' from outside the engine bay, from behind the bumper, and 'pushed' when the car was moving at speed.
btw, I tested it for flow, it was quite free, I used a vacuum cleaner on 'blow' and held it in front of the opening, and put my hand inside the air box(with the top half off and filter out of course) and I could feel the air being blown in quite strongly.![]()
you should have taken the head light out for max air flow lol
