had a look in my fuse box or what i believe to be the fuse box and noticed that two of them had some serious meltage goin on. in the pic you can probably tell which ones are fryed but the worst one has a 25 on top

A comon problem I had 1 the same highbeam fuse, and yes its your fuse box..I see someone has already bypassed 1 fuse with an after market fuse holder..Originally Posted by VLACS

aftermarket fuse box, catch me on msn if you want one i will get one for you at a good price, however you might need a sparky to connect it up, or i could give it a go, otherwise replace the fuses and spray all the connections with "co-contact cleaner"
p.s make sure the size of the fuse is what the fuse lid says it should be.

You have a short in your circuit - that is what the fuse is for - unfortunately if you just replace the fuse then you are going to repeat the mashmellowing
I bought a VL with the front smacked in - only the lights and front bumper - the highlight wires were earthed - the previous owner did the mashmellowing - I was surprised. If you replaced the stocko fusebox and then put a fuse (old style) in the circuit that is 5amps less than stock then you will blow the sacraficial fuse instead of the plastic hot box
all of that right over my head

VLACS this happens on 90% of VL's. its not a short and its not likely to keep blowing fuses. the current through the box is more than the plastic can handle. it gets hot and melts. this only usualyl happens on the headlight fuses (one is high, the other is low) and occaisionally will happen in teh air con circuit.
you can get a whole new aftermarket fuse box which will take you about an hour to put in properly. why bother though? one of your fuses has aready been bypassed with an 'in line fuse' so do the same to the other headlight fuse.
youll still always have the melted bit on teh fuse rail but it wont get any worse and as long as the inline fuses are very close in rating (not lower and certainly not too much higher) they will never melt and much safer.
the inline fuses are less that $5 new so forget the wreckers.
put simply, look at the odd on one out and do the same to the other melted one.
if you really need pics let me know ill put some up.
The problem is the fuse panel itself and not the wiring. Go to an auto-elec and get yourself a ceramic panel. They cost around $40-$50 and cut your old one out. This means that you will have to do all the re-wiring/connecting yourself though so unless you know what your doing I wouldn’t do it.
There is no shorts in your circuits or anything like that… its just that panel… most of them are stuffed, well at least in every VL that I have seen.
Yeah there's some serious melting there...it's a common problem but i got to mine before it got past the two light fuses...you can pick up a new fuse rail from autobarn with the same amount of terminals or more for about 30bucks, since mine was only the two i just got a four pole rail for 10bucks...all you need is some wire and crimp connectors and some insulated spade terminals...cut the wires coming & going in the fuse, connect the extra wire if you need it (depending where you want to mount the new fuse box) connect the spade terminals on the end of each wire and plug them on the new fuse rail.
Had no problems with fuses blow or melting yet. But you should get a long life out of it, because the original one has last how many years before starting to melt, (18).
Of course theres other ways, but i found this pretty cheap.
bypassed with an 'in line fuse'???? i gotta get this cos im not paying some one else to

how many fuse poles are melted or melting...looks about 8...i'd watch this because they prob play up after a while and you'll have to get in-lines for all of them.
8!!!! i thought it was only 2. the ones with 25 on top

PUlled the pics up anyway. I had a look at yours and i would probably replace it. there seems to be alot of melt there. if you dont wanna fork out for a pcb rail (they are great but not cheap) grab a secondhand one, but then make sure you change the first two fuses to inline type as per my second pic.

USed to live down a 2 k gravel track and i hever never bothered dusting the fuse box lol.
Mine would be different because its a v8. they have different fuse and relay setup.
