Default removal of overdrive module/torque converter

hey guys, my overdrive unit is playing up and dosent engage properly, so what i want to do is disable it, i was all for disabling it untill i read up on the net about possible gear problems when going into 4th? what my question is, what can go wrong, if anything from taking out the wire from the torque converter solonoid, is it completly harmless?

    cheers

just unplug the Trans ECU and it will not go in to overdrive...(under Dash drivers side if u pull of the panel where the VK fuse box was where your right knee is while driving u will see the trans ECU..
    Unplug it and your done.
    will not effect anything else
whats up with your overdrive as in what it do??
they dont go in overdrive untill they are warm over approx 80kms and button engaged on shifter...
    Fluid Level as well,.
    Goodluck,,,,

just unplug the solenoid on the side of the trans ( the one closest to the bell housing) the only thing that happens is no lock up clutch (overdrive) you will only have a 4 speed, (again no overdrive) I have done this to 2 of my old vl's and have never had nor heard of a problem.
there can be no harm from the (torque converter clutch not locking up) overdrive being disabled it does not affect the first four gears.

    ok great, all good news.

well i tried unplugging it today, but i didnt know which plug it was next to the transmission, there was 1 plug by itself toward the front of the car, and 2 about 20cm backward that were next to eachother, i tried unplugging the one that was by itself and test drove it, nothing changed so i plugged it back in and havnt tried the other 2.

which plug is it? not sure what a bell housing it :S

in reply to DETOX, when i get to 80km when warm, overdrive will engage, then disengage, then engage and then vibrate through the car, if im nice to the transmission and as soon as it engages to OD the first time, and i back off the accelorator, it will stay in overdrive.

    thanks heaps guys

bell housing - the large round piece at the front of the trans which attaches to the engine, shaped like a bell.
the shudder is exactly why i disconnected the overdrive it is the lockup clutch inside the torque converter, it is stuffed.

    the trans is a 4spd + overdrive

"the auto trans in a vl is a four spd overdrive unit with gear selection controlled by an electronic control unit.
the torque converter has a lock up capability operated by a clutch within the converter engaging a various speeds which are programmed in to the control unit. when the clutch is applied, the driven member of the torque converter is locked to the driving member creating positive engagement and when the clutch is released the normal characteristics of the torque converter are used to propel the vehicle, using oil as the driving medium."

so in short disconnecting the solenoid means it is only a four speed and no overdrive.

ok great, thanks for the info. is there any other way to disable this? i tihnk i unplugged the plug that was closest to the bell housing yesterday, and test drove but nothing changed, but i definatly know its the overdrive playing up. is there something in the cabin that i can disconnect? i read something about in the kick panel? or under the dash?

there are only two solenoids on the side of the trans if you disconnected one and nothing changed then disconnect the other one.(one at a time as one is the fourth and overdrive cancel solenoid(PWR) which is activated via the switch on the selector)
I'm not sure how disconnecting the auto control unit (under the the kick panel at the base of the steering column). will affect it's operation.

wouldnt it be easier to leave the trans in the power mode (PWR showing on the orange button, this cuts out 4th
