OK so i got my car running AGAIN! and its got the same stuff as last time, exhuast, extractors, CAI, and stage 2 cam.. now the cam just went it, i think i advnaced the timing 1 tooth? I THINK!
I counted the teeth starting at zero goin up to 53 and mark it, put one mark on the crank, and when i tried to put the belt on the top it kept lining up 1 tooth to the right of the noth on the cam gear, so i tunrned the cam gear slightly and fought the belt and it went on HAZAAH!
BUT, because i turned it a bit does that means its advanced? Last time i timed it all up to stock timing it idled like a pig but now its beautiful.
Anyway the main thing is, what do i do with my ignition timing? Adnvace, retard? Stock 15d BTDC?
Anyone help?
hey, nice how easy was changing the cam timing may i ask?
umm ive heard you have to retard the ignition timing (assuming you've advanced the CAM timing) because the distributor runs off the cam gear... i guess use a timing light?
cheers
Id say standard cam timing and advancing the ignition timing 5 degrees or so would be the go if you advance the cam you'll just end up with a cam that goes like stock
Changing the cam timing can be a pain cos the belt isnt always the easyest to get back on, but other than that not to bad..
And green foam? Why will it run like stock? The durations will still be longer, and at different interval's they will just open earlier and later in respective order.
And also when it was on stock timing last time it wouldnt idle, it sounded like a cammed burnout car. it was ridiculous had no low down and would hardly accelerate..
If you advance the cam timing a full tooth that's like how many degrees on a RB? must be quite a few, every degree drops the power curve lower and lower, if one tooth was say 10 degrees then that's really going to cut your top end power, depending on how big the cam is (stage 2 sounds really small) then the timing the valves open at could easy be the same as stock. It's just really a stuff around to make the car drivable if you choose the wrong cam in the first place but you shouldn't ever have to do that. Much better off to keep advancing your ignition timing untill it runs good
Yeh i see what your getting at, But on an rb its only 7 degree's... and when they are running stock cam if you advance it, they run so much quicker on 98.
mine was done and i have never raced another vl and lost, Pull's so much harder down low which is what i like. The cam helps up top, but i'd still rather a car with more low down. I dont slide, or drive at ridiculous speeds, so IMO low down is more usefull to get you goin then the cam kicks in and off you go.
Its only a pretty stock car anyway, and your probably right about the cam being small, i dont have any specs just bought it with new lifteres for $200 and wacked it in.. I like it and it goes hard so im happy haha
will go harder when u got a turbo on it.....
IMO
Haha sure will, even though i had one on there but i took it off cos i couldnt finish it due to money and lost interest haha.. i can still beat turbo's, only the auto ones though haha
is it a pain in the ass advancing the cam? every1 says it gives better low end power which is good u dont have to rev it out...?
Is you car N/A? If it is ADVANCE ADVANCE ADVANCE! haha..
Umm its a bit of a bitch, u gotta take the harmonic balancer off, clutch fan, all necesary belts. timing covers and then time your car up, so set piston 1 it to top dead centre on compression stroke, line the mark on the crank gear up with the notch on the case next to it, and make sure that the dowel pin and dot on the cam gear are at the utmost position to make sure its all ok. then slack off the tensioner and move the cam gear clockwise 1 tooth and place the belt back on..
Sounds good and easy in theory but its not, see alot of vl's are already advnaced because in the vl book it tell's you to count 53 teeth between the mark on the cam gear and the mark on the crank gear, so on the belt if you start at the dot on the cam gear 1, 2,3 etc when u get to the mark on the crank gear u should be at 53. THIS IS WRONG!
The nissan r31 book actually tell's you to count starting a 0,1,2,3 because in japan 0 is the first number to them not 1. So first check that there are 53 teeth between the marks, so 0,1,2,3,all the way up to 53.
If thats all correct then go ahead and pull your belt off and advance it, but i found the easyest way was to leave the belt on the cam gear, clamp it with a set of vice grips. SOFTLY! and then turn the crank with a suitable socket using the harmonic balancer bolt counter clockwise and putting the belt on that way. But each to there own.
I know i kinda just wrote a novel but i hope that sheds some light for you...
ah sick that gives good insight! cheers wen the car isnt in use ill give it a crack! thanks a lot dude
Na mate your right, any time.. Hope all goes well![]()
Tell me how you went when you've done it
