oN MY OLD HOLDENS I always used fish oil from the auto shop - just a small amount on the rust flakes is better than nothing. BEWARE IT STINKS - I LUV THE SMELL OF FISH OIL BUT ALL MY FRIENDS HATE IT. IT ALSO ATTRACTS SAND, SO I DON'T USE IT ON MY VL AROUND THE BOOT LIPS BECAUSE SAND STICKS TO IT BETWEEN THE LID AND THE LIP - THIS IS WORSE. I ALWAYS GO TO ATLEAST 4 PANEL BEATERS AND GET A WRITTEN QUOTE, BEFORE ANY WORK.

I also wanna get some rust fixed up on my car...how bad can it be? i have a little bit of surface rust under the windshield...can it also be under the windshield (like under the seal)? Can it just be scraped off or has to be cut out and bogged with something?
I also have a big ass hole under my spare tyre in the boot...nething i can do to fix that b*tch of a thing?

I also gonna paint my bumpers cuz they look worn...if you have a paint gun...do it urself, not hard and it'll be cheaper...do the side panels cum off easy without breaking, cuz that wat im scared of.

You can use bog around the windscreen (after the rust is cut out) but it may weaken the structure around that area, so a better idea (more expensive) is to get some steel welded in to replace what was cut, same with the boot hole just get the rust cut out and get a sheet of steel welded in.

I had a VL with what looked like a few tiny bits of rust around the windscreen - turned out to be much much worse! I had to remove all the dash and the windscreen so the panel shop could weld in new metal. The roof also had to be repainted! VL's are renowned for rusting around the windscreen so I would think about doing it only if you were thinking of keeping the car for a long time!

Couldn't agree more with that statement. All the old models (VB-VL) rust in the same spots and you'd be surprised at what looks like a small amount of surface rust turns out to be extensive rust that is masked by the paint. Speaking from personal experience as someone who did the bog & repaint job a few years ago, your rust will likely rear its head inside 12 months if it's left in the weather. Reason being that body filler (bog) will retain moisture, as will a primer coating to a lesser extent. Trapped moisture = more rust. Welding in replacement section is the best way to fix it (but it will cost $). Have heard great reports about POR-15 as a preventative coating but I'm yet to try it myself and it will still require removal of all surface rust.

youll be looking at having the windscreen taken out. 90% of the time they break so look at another $200 for that on top of rust repairs. my brother had his done recently, had the front window, back window, a bit in the floor of the boot and some in the doors done and it was about $1400 with the paint only blended (as opposed to a full respray which i would reccomend if your serious about the car...)

if you dont plan on having the car more than a couple of years you can see how you go with cutting the rust without removing the screen and just bogging it. may or may not last very long....

yeah i have seen the rust under my windscreen, but havent got it fixed yet, waiting til a get another job, so i have some cash flow. yeah i would want to get it cut out, rather than bog on the windsreen. even if it costs more, i herd a way the check if its been done is to get a magent and stick it to the parts you had fixed, if it sitcks they done it right, if it doenst they ripped you off and fillied it up with bog

Hey vlv8vic, what state u from? Or, where did your brother go for the rust removal and respray? I'm in Melb and I'm desperately looking for a good panel beater that's not going to cost the earth. Anyone got any referrals?
