the springs are starting to come thro on my driver seats, how hard is it to get the seat out? i cant figure it out, any ideas cheers![]()
well... best idea is to get the RIGHT size allum key! and do NOT round ONE bolt or ur in __it! it'll either take half an hr or 4 hours to get those 4 screws out of each chair.
i took mine out a week and a half ago, rounded a head, tryed to drill it out for an hour and a half... couldn't... tried taking to the head with a hammer and chizzle, no good... multi grips didn't come close... last solution was taking to it with an angle grinder... stuffed the rail in the process...
needa weld a new piece of metal in there for the new bolt i gotta tap. apparently the screws are dipped in some glue when first fitted.
more work than I EVER imagined.... be patient lol, good luck bro
try appplying some WD 40 1st....top and bottom.........clean out the allen key hole of debris as well........( a bit late shutting the gate after the horse has bolted, i know....)....
I bent my allen key... seats are still in there...!!
if you unbolt a part of the seat from the railing you can move it a bit and then you can get a allen key socket onto it...thats how i did it but it was a while ago so i've forgotten which bolts and nuts they are
i have never seen or heard of a smooth removal. With mine i used INOX and hammer set the allen key and still had trouble. If you are bending allen keys you better get out the grinder![]()
ill have to try those "hardend allen keys" and use more force...![]()
lol stop buying allen keys from supercheap or the bodgey ones out the front @ bunnings. If it costs more, its for life.
The hard glue is actually loctite (which is a brand i know but ask for it). You should be putting it back on every time you take them out. If the seat is loose in an acco, it will shear folks, dont play tim the toolman with engineered parts. Heat is another way to loosen but if your metal glows red, you are changing the properties of the metal and it will soften, cracking the surrounding support.
If you want more inches, STROKE IT!
lol so how did u go cookie mobsta? ... if u need an angle grinder... hola =P
Try sitting on the chair and wriggling it as you twist. Takes alot of pressure off the bolt and allows it to be twisted no dramas.
ive just bought new seats coz my old one are torn down the drivers side. (hvent put them in yet, needing to fint the time. but a 6mm allan key is a perfect fit. had a look today and the drivers side is already loosebut the passanger side is not, so i can see its gona be hell. hopefully im not gona have to get the angle grinder out.
pulled the seats out the other day, easy to do, just sprayed a little wd-40 on the bolts, allen key and a ring spanner for leverage. they came out easy. just got to make the mounting brackets for my seats now.
this may sound dumb but there is a cheaper alternative to loctite, nailpolish, it will grip pretty much as good as loctite, im not sure if it will last as long though.. but if you are a tightass, do it the cheap way
silicone also does the same job......its only to stop the vibrations from turning the bolt
thats hell better than nail polish, and i could never think of a good cheap alternative to loctite
but loctite is light 3 bucks for a bottle and silicon is like 4 bucks a tube and you waist it cause it dries up and you have to buy a new tube
loctite you only need a little bit and the bottle last a long time
so buy the time you buy a tube of silicon implants in a tube you ur better of buying loctite i recon

The way I did mine was to use a correct sized allen key and a screwdriver with the interchangeable bits.
Allen key in the bolt... slot the end of the allen key into the end of the screwdriver that holds the bits and use that for extra leverage.
But - the ring spanner that was mentioned earlier is a far better idea! Wish I thought of it - I broke a screwdriver in the process
It's a long job regardless. Then again I had to swap the rails from one driver's seat to another (height adjuster was shot) - now THAT was a prick of a job![]()
Newb question but how hard would it be to put in better seats into my newly aquired VL, seats from say a VR/VS or VT or something?
All you need to do is put on the inside leg of S2 Vl Rails (and the bracket on pax side) onto VR/VS seats, VT has a different setup and needs brackets made...and theoretically egineering.
Fighting on the internet is like running in the special olympics, even if you win you're retarded.
I have taken the seats out of lots of commodores and this advice is the best. I spray them the night before and then I have had no issue getting them out. They are loctited from the factory (blue on the bolt) but once you crack that they are easy with the right tools. (the correct allen key and a pipe and gently apply pressure)
i put a big bar over the allen key to give me more leverage on it. its a painstaking job cos those threads just seem to go one forever and are pretty tight the whole way out. make sure you have a decent allen key and have it seated all the way in the head of the bolt so its less likely to strip it. if you find it hard to break the loctite give the bar and allen key a tap with a hammer to get it started.
if the carpet gets flooded, you have to remove the front seats to get it out to dry it
do you?
yes you do harry, also all the side scuff pans which have some little clips holding the carpet down under,
