(B) Have i blown my head gasket?! (/B)
I recently bought a Holden Vl 87, it has developed a flare between gears 2-3, running rough, pouring out heaps of white smoke from the exhaust when stopped, and is overheating.. this all happened in one day? overnight? i'v checked trans fluid and oil, all is fine, there was no water in radiator so filled that up but car is still stuffed but not heating as much. any suggestions?? :b:

is the oil milky at all, keep filling water up and remember to bleed it at the 2 screws. If its not pouring out and not going into the oil, its coming out the exhaust which means head gasket and or head is gone.

its not milky.. which 2 screws? i poured water in the radiator till it wass full so now thats alrite.. n its not coming out anywhere.. :b:
follow the top radiator hose to the engine, you will notice a little 10mm nut, thats a bleeder, also theres another on the very top on the intake manifold, identicle. You should warm the engine up, crack these bolts till water piddles out and then close em. by the sounds of it, if you are losing water and its not on the ground, its gonna cost ya.

where is the vaccum diaphram? my gears are flaring a bit (auto) could that hav anything to do wit the auto fluid? i dont think im losing any.
it is more like steam..
so i'l take out the nut from the bleeder n see if water comes out? if it does.. wotz rong wit it? new radiator? head?
water needs to come out, the air is trapped in there and once it goes, water will follow. Air trapped super heats to 150+degrees and cracks your head through one of the galleries, looks loke you could have done a head gasket or worse, cracked through the water gallery.
If it was auto fluid it would definitely be white smoke but if it looks steamy, as in moisture, then its definitely your water bud.

sorry im a bit of a noob, this is my first car.. where exactly is the bleeder? theres a thin hose that runs jus under the radiator cap to a small plastic bicket on the left side of the engine bay, so its not that one.. theres another hose a bit lower that runs under the motor or at the bottom of it, or theres another hose that runs from the left of the radiator to the left side of the engine but doesnt plug str8 to the engine..
thx mate.. will do n let know how it goes.. thx agen..
sounds like you might have already done some damage. the fact that you already had no water could mean the head has crapped it.
whta do you mean by a 'flare' between gears? you need to check the fluid when the car is running. when its stopped the fluid usually looks full however when running it drops dramatically.
its full now, it drank like 3 litres but then was fine..
its stopped overheating, but there is still a flare between gears, (like for a 2 sec span its in neutral and my foot is still down the same amount.. the trans fluid is fine.. theres also a shake when its idling and a heavier shake when goin less than 5km/h..
there is still heaps comin outa the exhaust even if im drivin it 4 30 mins.. the fuel consumption is high but outa the exhaust its like steam.. very wet n not much carbon dioxide..
check the water level. Mate this is where id say stop, get someone to look at it unless you're going to. Sound like gasket or cracked head, either way, lets not make it a complete rebuild bottom up from a piston locking up in the block when it overheats.
As for the gearbox... sure the oil is full when the car is warm and running and in 'p' or 'n'. Is the oil pinkish at all or is it brown and really pongy (smelly) auto oil really doesnt smell that much till its old and brown (burnt) in which case it needs a service. Take it to a mechanic that specialises in auto's, covers u for both.

now my car doesnt start at all.. i was on my way to get petrol and go mechanics and it conked @ the lights, when i started up agen it started choking and backfiring and then stopped and didnt start agen, my neighbour is an old mechanic and he says the air flow meter is gone... the mechanic quotes $480, but i can get brand new for $240.. mite jus go to the wreckers instead.. the oil still looks normal and has no smell. my caty converter was about to fall off so i tightened it up (wen my car was still running, and i think it stopped the steam, but there is sumfin in the muffler, i g2 check it out, sounds like a heap of water!!!
turns out it was the head gasket.. and the petrol pump... AWESOME!!!! that'l set me back a fair bit for an old car!!!
I wonder what those scales on the top right side of my posts do...
dang 2 for 1, still thats 2 less problems you'll have for a while. WD for fixing it and not chuckin the car.
